bought my seats from mckenzies and the seat mount bar.
got a question at this point the seat is on 2x4's for mockup will 1/4 thick flat steel be strong enought to ruin from the tunnel to the bar for my seat mount of should i run tube from the bar to the tunnel to mount the seats on??

I would run the tubing fromthe tunnel to the cage, then run the 1/4 flat bar front to rear to mount the seat to... use at least 1-1/2" wide flat bar at 1/4 thick. _________________ "It's not complicated, it's just expensive!"

I'm planning to run square tubing between the heater channels and the tunnel. I would be concerned about flex in flat stock, even 1/4 inch. _________________ It's mine now and I want a BAJA!!! |

I ran tube from the tunnel to my cage, and i just welded tabs for the seats. i didnt use sliders, soooo no one can ask to drive my car unless they can fit into my seating position... also the front of my seat is about 1 in higher than the back, to get rid of the straight up and down sitting position. its just to uncomfortable for me to drive sitting straight up for an extended period of time.. your cars looking pretty good.

looks pretty dang good, I used plates also. tabs are readily available almost anywhere now, and just as easy to make. for 1 or 2 bucs a piece I just bought mine, although I did have to make my front ones because the rake of the seat.

I run tubes to the tunnel .. then use tabs .. That does help keep the weight down.. BUT
at the doors I have the tube between front and rear hoops lower than you do,, I put the right at the floor ... so welding has to be done it stages,, in order to get a full weld..
then at the tunnel,,, mark where a plate will be to support the end of the seat tubes,, drill holes in the plate,, drill holes in the tunnel ,,, dimple the tunnel holes and weld in large nuts or threaded couplers....
bolt the plate to this and weld in the seat tubes.. this way the cage can be unbolted from the pan
This is more for a Fiberglass buugy,, where you would do a body lift the use that as a Base for the upper cage
I'am dead againest fastening a roll cage to the floor ( pans) if there stock,, there rusted,, if there aftermarket there about as thich as a beer can
I can just picture me upside down,, top smashed to the doors,,,,, the roll cage stick out the bottom and I'am sitting in the car going WFT ??? |

looking cool friend.... I like the cage being pushed as far forward as possible like that.... baja's are small enough inside without a poorly built cage cluttering up the space.... _________________ Shameless buildthread plug:

ok so im starting to plan the suspension....
im going to pick up a irs bus trans next week and i want to go 3x3's in the rear with some wider arms up front im gonna be running a 12inch fox res in the rear and a 10in fox res in the front (got two of the shocks already from a previos project)
i need some opinions on rear arms, axles, ect... hopefully a complete kit please keep in mind i want to keep stock style suspension. and what type of arms for the front want something around 2.5 inches wider perside....
im gonna have Big Bob make me a fuel cell for the bug something around 16 gallon with a fuel sender....
any and all opinions are greatly appricated this is my first bug build and i have the general idea of what im doing, but i know i have experts on this website that can save me the trouble of doing this twice!
thanks

got the tabs mounted up so the seats are finished.... untill i get my seat belts then i can run the seat belt bar behind the seats. nows the time to start running tubes forward to the front.
i have been tossing up the idea of moving the front axel tube forward to extend the wheel base about 3inches any advantages? is it worth the effort?
also no ideas on suspension besides going to mckenzie's and piece by pieceing it? |
