Well, time to subject myself to the opinion of the public. These are some pics of my baja bug build up. This is the first cage i've ever done (got a friend helping that has done one), so constructive ideas are appreciated... just be gentle.
RIGHT NOW:
*dual port 1600 w/ stock IRS
*33 gallon fuel cell
*PRP seats (both sides on sliders)
*adjustable steering column w/ quick release steering wheel
*cut/ turned ball joint beam, with goofball coilovers (they were cheap, and I needed shocks)
*Rear stock, just preloaded one notch with some used kyb's
*reversed bias type 1 brakes with cnc cutters
*80% caged 1 3/4 .120 wall mild steel tacked in place (most all the fab work pictures are "in progress" ie just tacked)
PLANS:
*Ecotec (I have the longblock 4,000mi 03' Saturn Ion with most sensors. Need the computer, wiring, dizzy, and an alternator.) Would like to find another longblock to put some forged parts in for a turbo
*091- Just picked up a 80-83 side shift core
*A-arm front end
*3X6 rear with pivots moved out 3 inches (microstub)
*powersteering
The plan is to keep it driving as long as possible. I'm going to collect all parts before tearing down the drivetrain or suspension. I'd like to build a "mock frame" for the front end to build the front suspension off the car.

33 gallon fuel cell???!!! DAMN!!! I thought my 22 gallon was huge...
That will end up being a heavy baja with your tube choice. Do you plan on raicng it? If not, I think .09" wall 1.50" would have been fine. That's some heavy tubing for a baja cage. _________________ "It's not complicated, it's just expensive!"

No need for a backseat... the measurements worked... and it was only like $30 more... I don't plan on having it topped off all the time, but its nice to have the option.
And on the tube choice, if i race it, it will just be in sportsman... but, only the main hoops of the cage will be 1 3/4 .120wall. the rest will be a mix of .090 1 3/4, 1 1/2 .090 and 1 inch...
My last car was 1 1/2, and I drove like a jacka$$ in it... I wanted to avoid getting hurt, especially once the turbo ecotec is pushing it.... _________________ Shameless buildthread plug:

Fuel Cell and Rear cage (left some room on either side of the cell for coil-over and bypass to be mounted as soon as there are some neat arms to mount them to.
Deciding on how much the Ecotec and 091 will be moved back before I build the rear bumper. Only want to do it once.

Nice work...looks pretty sweet.
The bug looked pretty clean to start with, was it really as good as the first pics leads us to believe? kinda a shame for the PO...
What brand is your fuel cell? and where do you get the fuel fill assembly? Cost? _________________ '68 with 091, 4x5 arms, 1835cc, 44 IDF, full cage |

Thanks for the atta boy...
Na... it was definately a 30 footer... body was pretty straight... but the PS door pillar was completely rotted through... there is a Wolfburg west section in there now. (that kinda fit like crap, but I stuck it in there anway. probly redo that when I go to paint it.) The paint that is on there looks to be a single stage job done with a pos spray gun... lots of orange peel, no real gloss, but doesn't look like it was intended to be low gloss (if that makes sense at all.) That pic should make for some neat before and after shots though...
The fuel cell is a foam filled 33 gallon Jaz. Not top of the line for certain, but better than a coffee can right? The filler assembly was from ORW. And they were awfully proud of it. Just over $120(or round about) for the filler, 2 1/2 filler hose, and a vent hose. I know that Mckenzies and Kartek have similar fillers.... but the girlfriend actually sprung for that one as an early Xmas present. _________________ Shameless buildthread plug:

This is my 22 gal. Fuelsafe. Doesn't look that much smaller than yours (10 gal less?). What are the dimensions of your cell out of curiousity?

Damn Dan, That looks a hell of a lot cooler than when it was sitting in my drive way! That is a huge gas tank, can I fill up from it when I run out? Cage looks good, I like the rear fenders where did you get them? Hopefully by mid feburary the Tortuga will be underway! |

I'll have to measure the cell again (or find the invoice) to tell you the exact demensions. But just looking at yours, I think mine is taller. Mine I went as low as I thought possible for a bus trans to sit above the shift tunnel, and the top looks to sit a bit higher up. Sure wish I had that nice looking FuelSafe cell though. The aluminum can looks way nice.... and i'm sure the bladder is more effective....
As for the rear fenders, those are the ones that came with the car! Just trimmed them a bit to get rid of the 1970's streetbaja look, and squirted them flat black with a rattle can... amazing how happy flat black rattle can spray paint can make me...
The bender I have is a JD2 model 3. (the cheaper one.) I did pick up the hydraulic adapter, and I use a hand pumped porta-power ram system that I got from Harbor Freight. I'll take some pictures next time I get a chance. The bending is slow going, but does the job. _________________ Shameless buildthread plug:

The shifter is an old Mickey Thompson buggy shifter. I don't know a whole lot about it as it came on a tube chassis baja that I bought years ago. Honestly, it looks cool, but it kinda sucks... there is no reverse lockout, which makes downshifting into 2nd a pain in the butt... I plan on doing a Supershifter when the bus trans goes in.
Thanks for the complements on the cutter mounts... I still wish I had the funds to use some braided steel line off the cutters to the hard line. I'll do that when I change out the cutters for the disc brake swap. It would look way cooler... but... The brackets were embarrasingly easy to make... Just a cut for 45degree angle and some time spent on the drill press with a hole saw. Still, I appreciate the attaboys... _________________ Shameless buildthread plug:

The cell is 34inches long x 17.5 wide x 14.5 deep. Jaz has it listed as 33 gallon... so basically with the solex 34 on the stock 1600.... by my calculations I won't need to buy fuel again until august of 2014.
