classic. the resistor should still be good. i'd measure the value, order one of a higher wattage that will still fit, and then solder it back in the standoffs but with longer leads so the resistor heat can dissapate a bit before hitting the PCB. won't take much length. that PCB can be cleaned up after the posts are removed.

you can 'rebuild' the entire ECU by attacking that resistor, shot gunning all the electrolytic caps, and reflowing each solder joint.

a tool like this is incredibly wonderful for desoldering components:

the capacitor next to the resistor is also bad... electrolyte oozing out from under the top cap. it is next to the very hot resistor so that makes sense that it has failed too.

were it mine, i'd replace ALL electrolytic caps. source them from Digikey.

ive already gone the go westy route... thanks for the reply. i may try to fix it in the meantime as I have a loaner ecu. how do I determine the resistance of that suspect resistor since you said 'too'?

my 'too' failure reference regarded the PCB/solder melt at the resistor. but since the markings are burned off the resistor, it should be swapped out. you'll have to unhook one end and then measure the resistance with an ohm meter. no way to check it in circuit.

go westy unit arrived. ran fine around town, but fails after 30 minutes of freeway driving. hope they have the resources to 'test' that on return, having a tech drive 60 miles to 'confirm' its faulty.
