Question - my type 3 had a type one engine installed with
Rigid mount no rubber bushings. I’m going to put back the original type 3 motor, will I need to rework trans Mount ? Wondering if the height will be an issue as someone previously cut out rear engine bay to fit type one motor and I have since repaired it to put back the original engine hatch access lid. Also note le throw out bearing is that of a type one by the looks of clips that retain the throw out bearing they are more U shaped than the others that look like a spring loaded clip. Can either clips be used ? |

you'll need to post pics. all variable by what the previous owner did. we don't know if its still swing axle, hacked in IRS, what year your car is, what year your pan is etc. _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Early swing axle transmission with frame horns, so any Type 3 engine should bolt in without modifications. _________________ 69 FI/AT square Daily Driver

Not quite Mike. Do you know what year the swing axle trans came out of? Just asking as a up thru 66 is still 6 volt, while 67 and 68 are 12 volt, and are clearanced for a 200mm clutch-flywheel (larger diameter). Prior 6 volt flywheels used a 180mm clutch, so not all are alike. We had to clearance my son's 66 type 3 transaxle when he went to 12 volt. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I knew I should put a question mark rather than a period on my answer. _________________ 69 FI/AT square Daily Driver

Bonus that your modified transmission will handle any Type 3 engine? _________________ 69 FI/AT square Daily Driver

| Or if your car is still 6 volt you can get a 6v - 200mm clutch flywheel from DPR. |

12v setup, but not sure if type 3 will go in smoothly
thats the question, I'm not certain about the mount
itself and if it will sit higher than factory due to the modification
and thus will not be able to close the hatch if not corrected.
This my first type 3 so its new ground for me. |

| I’d replace the rear trans mount with a stock unit and some good quality rubber mounts. Having it rigid mounted like that isn’t necessary. The good thing is it doesn’t look like the frame horns were modified so there should be no reason with the stock mounts for concern. |

Agreed. The "extra bracing" looks to have been added for drag racing to prevent wheel hop. Some here have added it as well, but I can't say whether or not it's worth the trouble to add for a street car. I'd replace the trans mounts while you have access to them, and replace the trans input shaft seal too, since it looks like it's been leaking.
Since the trans bell housing has been ground out, any type 3 engine should bolt up. Keep in mind that you'll still have to watch carb, manifold, and air cleaner height IF you want to get it all under the floor. Type 3s are know for limited space there. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The tough one to find might be the front trans mount, as several different styles were used over the years due to the changes in the nose cone. The 3 rear mounts are the same as a bug mount (mount at the bell housing). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

a solid mounted trans/engine will be about a 1/4 in taller than the stock rubber mounts on the og cradle.
I have a solid engine mount, ict webers on solex iron manifolds with bakelite spacers between the carb/manifold & the manifold/head. This all adds up..to an additional 3/4 in.over the stock set up.
With that tight of a space between the air filters & the engine lid I had to use some rubber air cleaners.
The stock solex carbs with the original oil bath air cleaner will fit just fine with a solid mount, given you dont have any other issues with your sub frame or frame horns being bent |

Looks like wrong mounts or did I get wrong mounting bracket as it fits if I don’t use new front mounts - was trying to get rid of solid mount. Can I get your thoughts ?
