I have a 72 Super and it did not come with any type of jack for changing a flat. I was wondering what type of scissor or Bilstein jack do you carry for changing a flat while out on the road? Also is there a good spot on the car for even using a scissor jack without lifting the entire side? I need to get a jack just in case. I searched the forum and didn't find a great answer. Thanks! |

A small trolley jack that fits under the hood. Or the back seat. |

ya its like a mini floor jack , got mine at harbor freight for under 40 dollars . much more versatile . but i also have the original jack in the bug
i keep a short piece of 2 by 4 to set between the jack and car so it doesnt leave any marks . |

I carry a small scissor jack which came on older Toyotas. On the front I jack on one of the end frames of the front suspension beam. For the rear I jack on the bottom of the shock housing. I also carry several short 2x4 blocks, a small square of plywood to go under the jack if on dirt. Has worked for me for over 55 years. Good luck |

I actually have that jack. I’m referring to the stubby ones. Sometimes their in a plastic case, but still weigh a bunch. _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

I used to use a small scissor jack but eventually sought and bought an original Bilstein. I like it a lot better than the scissor and there’s actually a spot for it. Sure, it lifts one whole side of the car but, so what.
I haven’t had a chance to change a flat yet, but I have practiced putting the car up and down with it.
My biggest problem is putting the flat somewhere as my wheels are too wide to fit in the spare well. _________________ Volkswagen!

Where are using as a jacking point? Say if you need to change a front flat. |

I carry the original but am also on the lookout for a better option. A guy in my neighborhood has a '73 Super that his father bought new. He damaged it last year when the body metal buckled above the jack slot while doing some work on the car.. Real downer. I've had to use it on 3 occasions without problems, but definitely want an alternative. The aluminum one looks good, even if pricey. _________________ "Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their disposition

I just used a Honda scissors jack. Put the head directly under the original jacking point and jacked it up. The scissors jack is lightweight, compared to a floor jack, and it's not rolling around and banging into your trunk lid. I also use a short 2x4 to place on the ground before placing the jack on it.

No, just a small floor jack in a case. _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

Mimosa6 if the flat is in the front I jack under the end portion on the front suspension beam that is down lower than the bottom tube. In the back I jack under the shock housing. I started doing this many years ago in the northeast( long Island) , because many of the bugs I had back then had rusted around the jacking points which would sometimes cave in when you tried to use them.Bob |

That's exactly what I have in my Beetle and Civic, wood and all, except I use pieces of 2x6. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? I carry a can of Fix-A-Flat.
I have different size tires front and read (195/55-15 and 205/60-15) so neither will fit in the spare tire well.
My car is lowered so a stock 165-15 will hit the fender. The transaxle has a ZF-LSD so running different size tires left/right can damage the friction clutches.
I do carry a Porsche 928 scissor jack. It will fit under the lowered front, folds very small and is made of aluminum so it's very light.
