Plastic screw caps on 2002 Weekender … how to remove?

I have spent quite a bit of time on the internet and the Samba the past couple of days researching how to install the new Boss 9” screen stereo with backup camera, and now pretty clear on how to install thanks to those here that have done it already! Except…. In order to remove the upper plastic trim panels, you’ve got to remove these plastic caps…. and nowhere does anyone reference how to remove them without damaging! I know a small screwdriver would do the job, but would no doubt damage them. Anyone have done this, and has a way to remove without damaging? Thanks , Bob

I have not found the magic solution. But, I have removed those little caps so frequently that I definitely have ruined some. Especially the ones holding on the rear cross piece. I have used a small screwdriver, a thin plastic interior trim tool, and even a utility knife. Whatever you use just be gentle and patient and you should get some repeated use out of the covers.

I also use these on the sliding door for a couple of screws.

Bigfoot, thank you! Any idea what size ? I am debating whether to try removing them, or going for installing the wires in the small crevices between the floor and the wall panels , then removing the B panel, removing the panel above the door and A panel and then behind the dash and to the radio. Going to install the radio first and then decide about the route to the backup camera. I will still buy the caps! ( So I have an option). But Either way I will document the install for others. I'd use a small pick tool like a dental pick to try to get the caps off.

Well, after a VERY LONG whole day, I know when I’m “beat.” Trying to remove the plastic panel on the A pillar…. And almost cracking it…. I am not going to risk cracking the “ brittle with age” plastic trim panels on the interior to run the wiring for the rear camera. I also tried going along the outline of the plastic trim in the floor, which was MUCH more cooperative, but alas, that way the wire for the connection to the camera is about 3’ too short. I can get longer RCA cables, but they won’t work with the Boss supplied camera, as not a typical RCA cable connector. I will get another camera…. and need recommendations! So…. I think I read somewhere that someone had gone underneath with wiring….if you have, please let me know the entrance and exit paths that you took! Bob

Maybe one of those wireless transmitters would work for you. They come with yellow video cinch cable signal input. I was toying with one of those to connect a universal camera to my original vw navigation screen. I did install a universal wireless backup camera with separate screen in a Metris and it works very well.

Well, did MORE reading and research. I will update after I receive the new hardware I just ordered. Thanks to all that are “ coaching “ me. As you all have cautioned….. this is a “”PITA.” Bob
