over $4 billion in off-balance-sheet liabilities

I call scam based on that alone. Sounds like they were hiding debt.

Quote:
the analysts expressed concern about First Brands’ financing arrangements, some of which carry interest rates north of 30%,

30%? Someone was 100% running some sort of embezzlement scheme

If Fram goes belly up, it will be no loss, crappy oil filters we dont need. as for the wiper blade maker, to hell with them. i hate wiper makers, seeing as they no longer sell replacement blades without having to buy the whole dam assembly. didnt used to be that way, no,it is wasteful and expensive.

I've been buying wiper refills through Amazon. Cut to length.

Appears more American people might be losing jobs. That’s a bummer.

Fram was the only spin-on brand filter that you could easily remove with just your hand. I know nothing about their filters otherwise. I usually get whatever is on sale at the time.

Not a big deal yet.

First brands is a holding company. Companies like Centric are pretty damn large manufacturing conglomerates. Airtex manufactures in US, Mexico, Spain and China.

Various divisions will either be snapped up by other companies or sold off. Thats part of the problem.

These big holding companies run around getting loans, enticing investors and snapping up other companies. If they end up with a crappy mix of companies they can lose their ass on the whole pile.

Several of those Automotive companies in that list should have been left alone to die or gotten rid of. Like:

Autolite
Cardone (they make crap)
Either Raybestos or Stoptech (probably Raybestos in my opinion)
Either Fram or Luber Finer (probably both) . Luber Finer mainly made their name on truck fleet oil filtration supplies.
The wiper blade companies....the Michelin do not show up in any "best of Reviews" neither do the Anco blades. Trico, Bosch etc are the main ones. I would have sold all three of these off long ago. No shortage of blade makers.
Both Carter and AirTex manufacture enough for OEM's and aftermarket that they are both keepers.

Interesting!

The fuel system loss could be very bad for older car owners. Somebody will make wiper blades and oil filters. This is really the writing on the wall as disposable un-fixable cars dominate the market

Fram makes stuff in America, red china, S. Korea, and Mexico. The Chapter 11 Bankruptcy does not always mean the manufacturing is shut down, rather the company is often sold to some other entity and production will continue. Perhaps new management will correct the quality problems that plagued Fram, the Orange can of death brand of oil filters.

If not, there are other oil filter makers, some making them in America, their business may pick up then..

Bankruptcy can be a good thing, it is a way to save a company that is going broke.

I use K and N oil filters in most of my cars, these are made in USA! (this includes my VW Vanagon) and run a Ford racing filter on my full flow oil system 914 car, and VW Kelmark GT kit car, these also are made in USA.

BUY AMERICAN!!!!!

For wipers, I havent bought them in a while, but I will look for American made. Do you have any recommendations, I prefer refill blades?

Not every American job that could be eliminated from this situation comes from the physical manufacturing of said product. Think marketing, transportation, retailing, and more you might not have thought about. American jobs are not just hands on production of products. Go deeper. RIP Dollar General, Harbor Freight, Apple, Walmart, Potash, oil, and etc

Do some more research.

I find it amusing that a dude pumps his chest and screams “Buy American” owns 15 cars and motorcycles made in other countries other then USA.

And I said “Appears more American people might be losing jobs. That’s a bummer”

You apparently don’t care about those Americans.

if Cardone leaves the planet we'll be better for it.

But I agree, too many big names to just go away, so I bet there will be a restructure of sorts and a lot of those brands will be fine.

Looks like the mainstays for your average FLAPS. Since I can buy the same quality stuff online for about half what AutoZone or Advance sells it for I can see this happening. They pretty much sell Chinese quality stuff with a huge profit margin. People don’t just buy blindly from retailers anymore, online has given us the ability to buy direct at wholesale pricing. Thereby eliminating this auto store brands and their mark ups. I get it brick and mortar stores cost a lot to stock and operate I’m just pointing out part of the process of how this isn’t unexpected.

It's all about the money, not about quality. Before we complain about items made overseas, we should look inward. If you or your company become incorporated, you are no longer assuming responsibility. Company goes under, you walk away with your money.

I remember when China, whom we called "Red CHina' , exploded a nuclear bomb, which we called, a device.
