...or get a premium sound system with sub woofers and you'll never hear the engine or road noise again.

Seriously, I used rock wool behind 1/4" textured closed cell foam mat on anything vertical and used a layer of carpet underlay and foil water heater wrap on the floors and find the combination works well versus having nothing but the carpet and panels. I check the rock wool in the walls and up front occasionally and haven't noticed any moisture retention issues even driving and camping through the winter months.

The rockwool is great stuff and is a much better alternative to the fiberglass used in some original campers. It tends to not hold moisture and it blocks noise much better. We sell quite a bit of it from my work for sound proofing.

I used a fat mat type material called KilMat. Same stuff just cheaper. I used small pieces of it on each panel to prevent the tympanic resonance on the flat metal panels. On top of that I used adhesive neoprene with a foil top coat that I got on Amazon. I used this for full coverage.

In my opinion the most important thing is to use a closed cell product. Open cell products like styrofoam and spray foam and also the stock fiberglass can be penetrated by water and will hold it against the panel making rust a bigger problem.

Adhesive bubble wrap should be good, but a little fat mat on each panel goes a long way in writing things down.

I have not read all the posts...but plastic bubble wrapping? Alum foil on first, then the packing bubble wrap.

Foam peanuts (I can see the mess now...) stuff behind the panels? Shocked

If you have the big bucks.....spray polyurethane bed liner foam.

hey guys,

I would like to sound proof my westy but don't have the time. Can anyone recommend a place or person in and around Los Angeles that can do this for me and has the experience. I also need to refinish the wood paneling and Head Liner. Maybe it can all be done at the same time.

Thanks!
i hope this is the right thread to put this in.

is that the tar backed stuff that gives the smell of downtown new york on a hot day?

Yes they put it on the floors in the paint shop at ford as purple 5 year old wet paint is tracked everywhere. Every day they replace it with rolls and rolls and it always makes me gag when they do it

It's been mentioned in other similar threads and on other acoustic/vibration sites as a "don't do it" method. It's not just cheap, it's ghetto. Rolling Eyes

I am looking for the right product for soundproofing the floor and door cavities of my 76 Westy after a POR-15 treatment.

Does anyone have any experience with MegaMat, RattleTrap or FatMat? The first is advertised as a butyl based product while the latter two are asphalt based.

I've read that butyl based products are preferred for many reasons including but not limited to smell, heat durability, etc...

I am seriously considering the MegaMat but I thought I'd get the sage advice of others who have been down this road. I'm also open to other product recommendations.

Here is the link to the MegaMat product. http://www.fatmat.com/bulk/megamat/100.html

Thanks in advance!

Not to say there's absolutely nothing new to say about it, or that additional opinions don't count........

I used FatMat and some thermal insulation i found on Ebay...... it's high density foam bonded inside a silver polymer for heat reflection.... it definately works well in mine.....with the a/c on it can stay 72 degrees inside when it's 90+ outside..... Cool

The top was later finished with thermal barrier insulation and a nice 1/2" foam backed headliner material....

Did some research on the web last summer looking for ways and material to deaden some of the noise in my '71 Westy. Came across a web site where the fellow had done a decent amount of research using all kinds of material from low prices to some that were really pricy. I finally settled on the MAAX prouduct and now all I hear is the wind whistling in from all the old seal etc. Well, I can still hear the engine a little, just enough to know it is still there and running good. If you do do any sound deadening in the engine bay, be sure that the material used can stand the heat generated especially during high ambient days. I did mine from the inside.

You sure that's the right e-mail address? Or might it be missing an "e"?
