I bought this 1966 Westy Hardtop in 2002. It was bought new from Lossman Motors in Cleveland. I am the third owner. The original owner sold it to a VW enthusaist friend of mine in about 1995. My friend sold it to another friend in about 2000. I bought it in 2002.All of the original documents and manuals are still with the bus including service book, owners manual, Westfalia Manual, etc.
The bus was completely original and in great shape when I got it. I had the body touched up and painted and did some minor repairs. I now has about 70,000 miles and runs like new.
I didn't realize that it had the Big Top tent under the rear seat at first until the second PO told me. I had busses and pick-up for years but was quite naïve when it came to Westy's. I also bought a 67 pop top walkthrough a few years ago.
Here's a few pics of the 66.

I give a lot of gredit to the previous owners for taking such good care of it.
This is Dennis the second owner in 1995.
These kids now have kids of their own.

I bought this 1966 Westy Hardtop in 2002. It was bought new from Lossman Motors in Cleveland by a man named Stanley Bonko. I am the third owner. The original owner sold it to a VW enthusaist friend of mine in about 1995. My friend sold it to another friend in about 2000. I bought it in 2002.All of the original documents and manuals are still with the bus including service book, owners manual, Westfalia Manual, etc.

Didn't the early issue have a huskier chain on the poles with the later issue having wimpy chain? |

I do not think you can date the tent... it seems to be the more common awning stripes, it is a 65-67 tent... and possibly towards the later, 67 with that awning. Nicest tent I've seen in awhile! Congrats... looks like new. |
I have the original tent for my April of '65 and it's the same as the one above. |
Well ok then... scrap my theory! I was assuming less common awnings... earlier tents. It does make you wonder if there was any rhyme or reason to the awning colors. The real nosy questions we all want to know (moonlytryder)... how much did you pay? _________________ "If you don't do it this year, you'll be one year older when you do." -Warren Miller |

As far as I know there's no date codes on the SO-42 big top tents which were 65-67 only. Pretty sure the bay windows ones received a date code on them at some point.
Pretty lucky score!! |

Yes I am sure it is from 1965-1967, just trying to determine if there is a way to narrow it down. Yes it was an extremely lucky find. Here are the pics from the craigslist ad.
the sellers has no idea it was volkswagen related. It was stored correctly and well cared for, definitely as near perfect as it gets for a 50 year old canvas tent. |

Congrats on owning a super nice big top tent. Extremely hard to come by, especially in that condition.
I've had three big tops ranging from nice to damn near mint and yours appears to be in the nicest shape judging from the pics.
From the research I've done and all the SO-42 Westy's I've owned this tent was available from 65-67. There are a few variations and that most likely has to do with the suppliers who actually made the tents for VW.
Looks great with your Westy and good luck with it!! |

And the other side away from the snaps you can sew a rope into a looped hem and that will slide into the gutter rail. |

Damn Jeremy!
About a year ago I sold an extra mint "BigTop" attachment boot I had to an enthusiast in England. He needed it and was very happy to get it. Bummer...

Hey folks- Does anyone have the dimensions for the boot that attaches to the drip rail- 67- SO42 big top tent?
I'd like to have one made... did not find anything else on them. I'd really appreciate it if someone could share those dimensions. Seems fairly rectangular in pictures, maybe just a couple measurements to get me going.
Thank you for your time-

LOL nah, back at just the two. I had a friend who needed one for his bus some time ago so i worked a trade with him on the other one. |
Ok, I'll refrain from the hoarder comments... I'd love to score a Big Top for my 67 Westy...but to be honest it would be just to complete the package...I like camping out of the bay tent with a floor...Hey wait...am I Bay?!!? My bus is split!
