Here is my proof that 9648 DOES exist.

FWIW, the 4-digit code on the plate is Volkswagen's internal sales code for the color. Some colors even have more than one sales code because they were used on more than one model/trim (ex. Agata Brown has 4803, 4831, T1). Paintscratch.com does list these sales codes next to the paint codes, but not for all Bus colors (ex. L63H/P4 for Sage Green). As you guys probably already know, a repeating two-digit code = single color (ex. B1B1, Bali Yellow), while two different two-digit codes = two-tone Bus (ex. B9E1, Ivory & Brilliant Orange).

Click/tap here for the 1967-1979 European paint code-sales code cross-reference list (and it's not 100% complete). From 1980 onward, those pages include interior codes; unfortunately, Bay Window interior codes are MIA.

I wrote to VW Germany in 1990 ish,, same answer
At the time I had never seen a chartreuse Microbus, and internet wasn’t like today
So there is an argument about L-65K Raveena green, bus and ghia , and 82176.. that seems to be different from std numbers Yosemite yellow , baligleb,

In my experience, the formulation isn’t the same any more as the paint isn’t the same,, so using a colour match method works excellent

You could try custom matching. Please visit:

information on custom matching.

Or you could order a small bottle of

1974 Volkswagen Convertible
Ravenna Green L65K

and see if it's a match.

Here's the m plate.

I thought the color code referred to this color:

That's different than what's there and what I've typically seen in this color bus, which is this:

But, if Camping Red just indicates that it was whatever plaid, then that would make a lot more sense. Or maybe the plate is wrong?

Thanks!

This picture shows some of the bed. Sorry it doesn't show much but you get the idea. FWIW the corners by the windows have faded from sun.

This picture shows a spread of curtain fabric which was behind the closet. Looked like the screw was put through it which holds the thing the curtain slides on.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the help, and the warm welcome.

This is the front seat. Both are like this and had two other covers on top of this. The vinyl on the sides has a remnant of the correct color.

The interior layout looks pretty standard to me. Sink and ice box cabinets in their proper places, closet cabinet in the back on the driver's side.

More pics in next post.

What is the floor layout for the cabinets in the rear? One thing to keep in mind when questioning its originality is your destination code. Its not a cookie cutter US spec version but a UK bound bus. I think that leaves room for special orders and requests for things being fitted to your bus when new.

Post them pics!

Hi Folks,

First post, and I know this is an old thread but it seemed like the right place.

I have an orange 1975 Westfalia Bay and I'm trying to figure out what the original interior upholstery colors would have been for restoration purposes. Most busses I've seen with the brilliant orange exterior also have the orange plaid interior. However, using the m plate decoder mine has the code for camping red. The beds in the bus have the orange plaid, but the front seats have been recovered, so I'm not sure if what's installed is original.

The color numbers on the m plate are 9226 and 09 (reads 922609). Export code is UK for what that's worth. I can try and post a picture later if that would help.

Just wondered what you guys thought, or for that matter what suggestions people might have about what would look good.

Thanks in advance!

-Ben

The orange plaid would be the correct material. I believe "camping red" is just a generic term for all the plaid variations. Mine says the same thing.

Oh, and welcome to the forum! Maybe start a thread on your bus if you have the time. I'd love to see pictures!

Any good body and paint shop will have (or have access to) a color matching camera, why trust a code mix from 40 years ago?, paint fades and formulas/materials change. Seems different manufacturers color chemists are colorblind in different ways as well, one brand's yellow won't look exactly like anothers.

Thanks for the help.

Curious....I will take this to an auto body paint shop, will they use a clear coat on this beside the color (Bali) I believe?

Also how do you instruct them about getting the right code for the mix?

I'll post a picture shortly.

I thought this number was the paint color and could be crossed referenced.
