In Melbourne Australia many years ago myself and two friends wrote off a Ford falcon xc ute, the mad max type. This was on the main St kilda highway which has 2 tram tracks in the centre of the highway. My friend was driving, I was instructing as he never drove before, I told him to turn right at next turn which he misheard as turn right immediately. We bounced over the tram tracks in a 180° spin and hit a pole with the left rear side of the ute, the pole stopped the spin and left us stopped right across the two tram tracks. The impact broke the back axle so we were stranded although the motor was still running and throwing out a lot of smoke as always. By now there were a few trams held up by us and a crowd were starting to gather.
Best and only thing to do was grab our tools from the back of the ute and run.

Years later I heard the guys we bought the ute from were still getting letters about the incident. Sad ending to a great ute and having no money to replace it was pretty shit too.

Put a car into a creek by accident off-roading. Flagged down a truck with tow cables to pull it out. The truck needed more weight so 5 of us climbed into the bed and applied our weight.

Drove 3 hours in a white-out blizzard for a sandwich and beer. A cop wanted to pull us over, did 60 MPH in an Audi AllRoad when the rest of traffic couldn't do 15 MPH, cop gave up.

Got pulled over doing 96 in a 25 school zone with students actively walking. The kid driving the car was the chief of police's son and got off with a warning.

Sorry. Nothing to do with VWs except my bus was broken down at the time, thus the story. The ex and I put a Honda 90 three wheeler rear wheels in the back of out Toyota Starlet and tied the hatch down to the front wheel hanging out. Most of our camping gear and one kid in the car and drove from San Diego out to Glamis for the weekend. Lots of people gave the thumbs up on the way out and back.

In 1976 my mother had a new VW Dasher sedan 4-door with the large hatchback. A local sporting goods store had a 13' aluminum Grumman canoe on sale. My dad agreed to buy it, and my cousin and I drove the Dasher there to pick it up. We moved the right front seat forwards and rotated the backrest to its most upright position. Folded down the rear seats to make a flat floor. That enabled us to load at least half of the canoe inside. I sat in the back and held the front of the canoe down. We tied a red rag to the rear of the canoe which has hanging at least 5' out the back. Drove with the hatch open on the highway. We rolled down all windows so that the car's exhaust would not get drawn into the cabin but could still feel/smell some of it. Made it home OK; luckily only about 5 miles away.

Geez, there's so many crazy things, but my Navy days were some of the funniest and most herbally related! There was this tunnel near Norfolk and we'd be going like 55 in a Navy vehicle, shut it off, pump the gas a bunch, then turn it back on and blow the muffler. Pretty loud in a tunnel and all the other cars would swerve all over when they heard it...Once I checked out a van from the motor pool with only 93 miles on it. I was backing out and didn't realize there was a chain across the aisle, hit it pretty hard and bashed in the corner. When I got back to the boat they asked me what happened and I said "I dunno, it was like that when I got it"...Another time they sent me to get some tritium water in our old 69, 70 step side Chevy truck and when I got back everyone came running outd hollering that tritium water is supposed to be transported in a lead lined vehicle. I was like "Hey, y'all pitched me the keys and told me to go get it, so I did!"...Once our boat was in Groton and at the time it was too big to get under the bridge so we had to moor over by the Fulton (sub tender) and I talked the Section Leader into making me Duty Driver. I would ferry guys back and forth to the Sub Base and we'd all be drinking, but one time I'd just dropped some guys off at the boat and was heading back to the base and there was this guy talking on a pay phone with his car parked next to it. While turning I hit his car big time, picked the driver's side nearly off the ground, scraped it all down the entire side and when I cleared it, the damn thing hit the ground and bounced 3 or 4 times! He had his back to the car and I could just imagine him trying to explain how his car was probably totaled while on a phone call! When I turned that van in, it probaly had 30 beer cans rolling around in it and plenty of herp dust all over the engine cover. It actually set off a Congressional investigation on drug use on subs. It wasn't just a job, it was an adventure! LOL!

Something similar happened to me in my Bug at around 16 years old. Check your tires to make sure you have enough tread.

Sent a 1990 Subaru Legacy airborne... really, really airborne. It didn't kill it (definitely threw the alignment off big time).

I did kill it at work about a week later when my boss and I had an impromptu demolition derby in the work parking lot, he was in a Ford Tempo that had been sitting on the property for some time... the joys of working at a wee little performance shop in the absolute middle of nowhere. (And the Subie absolutely destroyed that Tempo!)

why did this thread die!!!!
I cant even tell you how hard I was laughing by the end.

in 1978, I was sporting long hair, a bad altitude and a 68 sun roof baja. KC's on the roof, screaming yellow. Well back in those days the occasional "I will kick you ass" car chase was on. I lived with the parents then and we were in a brand new subdivision on the border of tempe az and mesa az. Much of it was farm land. Being I had a baja, I knew the area pretty good. There was one field with 8 to 10 foot high berms all the way around about a square mile. There was an irigation ditch that divided the fields. Well I was being chased by a Chevelle and I ducked into that field. I headed for the ditch, because I knew where the one and only railroad tie bridge was. The other guy didnt. he half hit the bridge and destroyed it and his entire front end. I had to climb the berm and leave via the up and over method. I also caught a buddy of mine in his baja "getting it on" in that same field months latter. I lit him up with the KC's too. kind of broke his rhythm. He was mad for about a week.
Another time...Still living with the parents, 3 am coming home from work. Jerk in the on coming lane had his brights on. I flashed him once, then again and just as he was passing by, he got the KC daylighters. Its very amazing how fast a cop can hit the blue lights when he is blinded. I ducked into the neighborhood and parked the bug on the side of the house. 2 hours latter, my dad was in my room giving me a lecture about how bad it is for cops to knock on the front door and him having to lie for me.

xmas years latter I explained to my dad that his car once did 12.46 at 128 mph at a drag strip. I (1973 401 AMC matador ex highway patrol interceptor) I was 45 years old at that time of my confession. Dad tried to give me a spanking right then and there.. I think he really meant it.

And as metioned previously, all of this happened in Arizona.

I was driving from Phoenix to Tucson in the 71 bug when it started raining buckets. Of course, windshield wipers were not currently working (or even on the car for that matter) I pulled into a gas station and stole a squeegee. Spent the rest of the ride with my arm out the window wiping my own windshield.

ahh, 17.

got me another one, this one happened in my dad's 1982 vanagon diesel. on our way back from LAX the throttle cable snaps, i was driving and let the van role off the freeway onto a off-ramp, my dad's genius knows no bounds and on this night he genius was showing, after he couldn't find out where the cable broke we found 7-8inches of electrical wire off to the side of the pavement, he connected one end of the wire to where the original wire connects in the engine bay on the injector pump/fuel pump and held in his hand the other end. the rest of the way home he sat in the back of the van with then engine cover 1/2 off controlling the throttle while i steered and worked the clutch. i was 16 or 17, iv never fully trusted his van and although this is one of the weirdest thing to happen to me in a car i wasn't at all surprised that it happened in his van

in my toyota mr2

my friend let me borrow an aftermarket steering wheel so i put it on and started to go driving to the junkyard (one of my many regular visits there just to check up on things) and i hated it, it was too small and so close to the turn signal thing that i was constantly hitting it along with the cruise control thing, so i got to a stoplight before getting on the freeway and i quickly took out my wrench unscrewed the bolt took off the crappy wheel and put on the original one that was in the passenger seat

iv probably done stupider just cant remember at the moment

Although the most fun we ever had was with his dad's '04ish E class Mercedes. He was driving me home, and there was a light coating of snow on the roads. He turned off the traction control, and then proceeded to drive down the 2 lane highway at 55 MPH, sideways on all of the turns. So fun...

was that 04 E class the 4matic? my friends dads 04 E320 4matic starts to slide through traction control at 95mph on a 35mph mountain road Shocked

It's not the 4 matic, just RWD. But we had the traction control off Wink

Considered taking the Beetle out today and having some fun in a snowy parking lot, but I currently don't have brakelights, it's dark, and I'd rather not be rear-ended.

*One year my friends and I lit fireworks and firecrackers from the inside of my old beat up Ford Escort while I was driving...a few of them were lit and thrown out the window onto the hood when we came to a stop. When they got to their first stage and took off, there left scorch marks all over the hood.

*Rode in the back of my best friend's pickup, pushing shopping carts out the back on deserted roads at 80mph...at night you see tons of sparks! In hindsight that was pretty dumb; my friend rolled that truck a short time later, bought a new truck and then totaled it by running into a parked car on the side of the highway in the early morning (both times he was the only one around and he caused his own accidents). Probably shouldn't have done that with him driving...
