Lowes sells a foam rubber seal for marine applications in small rolls. You will find it in the weatherstriping dept. DBHVW did an article on this very project, I don't recall what issue. Have fun! |

Those seals that ISP West sells fit on the Type 34 airboxes perfectly, as well. |

I spent a LOT of time and energy removing mine, cleaning it out, and re-assembling it.
if I NEVER have to do it again it'll be too soon
talk about a royal bitch job...
the good news is I don't get leaks from there anymore. the bad news is I still get leaks from SOMEWHERE _________________ 71 Squareback-FI -- 73 Bay (subaru powered)

That will not keep water out with the plexi glass. It could be a quick fix. Take the hoses off at the fire wall and blow air thru them and see if that works for you. That's as easy as it was for me. _________________ Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end

my fresh air boxes leak as well, when it rains or at the car wash, water on the floor pan, idk if its the hoses, the seal, or the box itself, tommorow i'll find out. But I'm thinking of just putting plexiglass under the vents. Would there be any cons to doing this? |

Take the hoses off at the firewall and blow compressed air up each one. You are getting deposits built up in the box and the boxes are filling up with water and leaking past your fresh air box seals. Leaves, pine needels and various other items get inside and clog up the system.
The boxes are designed to let water pass thru them and thru the hoses exiting the firewall. Keep hooking the hoses back up and dumping water thru them to loosen the deposits till it is all flowing properly. Unhook the hoses and blow thru them as many times as necessary to free it all up.
Clean up all water that may have entered the car while getting them operational.
If the hoses are cracked use Localboys advise on making hoses or look in the classifieds for some.
If you decide to take the boxes out and the seals need replaced, ISP West sells replacements and may have the hoses as well. _________________ Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end

I have not gotten around to fixing the boxes on my 69 fastback, so I have magnetic sign material over them.
Less messy than duct tape.
I think I got it at my local Hobby Lobby store. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Have fun trying to find a seal for the airbox!! |
I did that to my 65 this past winter when I had my boxes out. That's the best time to do it too. Just remember to unplug the battery, cause the wiper arms can take a finger off.
For the seal, I used a roll of window weld (made by 3M), it worked great, and I had plenty to do box boxes. I'm going to use the same stuff when I install the air box in my 71. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I have been getting water inside the 69 ever since I have had it. The humidity I think is the main reason for the rust in the car.
Since I will not have time to fix it before winter, I decided on a different route.
I went to Hobby Lobby, and got a 1ft x 2ft sheet of the magnetic material that they sell for refrigerator magnets. Cut 2 pieces 12" x 4" and put them over the fresh air vents. I have not had any water in the car since. This material is not the strongest of magnets, but does have and adhesive on one side. Since my car needs repainted anyway, I just put the sticky side down. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Except that his '69 should have plastic boxes instead of steel. Solved the rust problem, but doesn't hold up to well when sandblasted. _________________ Tony

Safety glasses is a must when under the dash. I removed my front seats so I could lay down. It is a little more work but my feet were not higher than my head _________________ - 66 Pigalle Square

I bought some clear vinyl [water] hose from Lowe's. ID was a little smaller than the box, but just heat it up with a heat gun and stretch it over the box drain. To remove the boxes you need to remove your radio and wiper motor/arm assembly. The boxes are mounted under the dash with 4 small nut assemblies ea. Just be ready to lie on your back and do a little contorting. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

Just wanted insight before I took those hoses off. When it rains I get a little run of water on the firewall, so I taped over the vents and it stopped. So now I am going to remove the hoses to clean and or replace if needed. Is the actual vent box easy to remove? Also can you actually clean the vent box out once removed? |
I've worked on a '69. You'll have to pull the wipers to get them out.
First I would try sucking all the crap out with a high-power vacuum, such as the ones at the car wash. Use a screwdriver or something to stir it around while you suck. It went in through those louvers so it can come back out.
If you just pull the hoses off the bottom of the boxes then you can run a stiff wire down them to clean them out. I have an old radio antenna with the little ball on the end. It works great.
If the hoses are bad then it's no big deal to replace them with any old rubber or vinyl hose of the right diameter. _________________ Tony
