The early (61-62) solid ivory, the anthracite & ivory (63-64), the dark gray & ivory (65-66), & the solid black (66-69+).

FWIW, I have the all white knob on my '63 Notch that was originally sold by a dealer in Hamburg. It left the factory in Sept. 1962.

My knob has the same crack at the point of widest circumference as the one in the pic. It is also covered with hairline cracks; I would not choose to remove them because the cracks give the knob character.

Weird story involving the knob. I used to park the Notch on the street in front of my house. One time a neighborhood cat jumped into the car, behind the front seat, when I opened the door prior to exiting. I didn't know at the time the cat was in the car after I shut the door because I didn't see it jump in, although I did see some slight movement out of the corner of my eye while still sitting in the driver's seat but gave no further thought to it. I knew for sure that the cat had jumped in at that time when, the next morning, I opened the door and it quickly exited. During its stay it left chew marks on the shift knob in addition to leaving a scat on the rug. I don't think it pissed because I didn't notice any sour urine smell.

I just got an all black knob like the far left. That crack, it seems the knob is hollow and the top is either glued on of snaps on. The black one I got I can open that a bit as well as push it closed so I see no slight gap/crack.

What will fix this is Testors liquid plastic cement for models . I used a pin of even a tiny brush and put a drop in the joint and then press it down and hold it, it will melt the plastic and it will become one . Don't try to wipe it off ,if it is does mar the plastic just buff it off with tooth past or plastic polish .

Most of the aftermarket stuff on-line dealers like J Bugs and others don't change the description and change vendors so I guess there is one vendor just like the 73 horn contact ring.

At least I have an original , hate that short knob VW put on the auto trans.

If one really wants to go bling there is a nice billet round tall knob the fits all VW 7mm,10mm and 12mm. only $25 and for $11 more you can get an angled extension so one can have the knob moved closer and taller best for standard trans yet would work for an auto. The extension is only for 12mm shafts.

As Russ pointed out before, while an extension might be OK for an AT, the excess weight and leverage of an extension and ball can cause wear to the 4th gear synchro. Not good for an MT car (T-3,T-34, bug or ghia).

A quick scout brings up this. I have seen it once before, but cannot find it in the archives. I say it is an accessory, and one in need of T.L.C.. If I found one, I would be glad to use it. Wood is always nicer than cold plastic.

On a general note, it seems there are few late accessories, including the tunnel tray, which I wish I had purchased.

Gorden, I am surprised that I missed yours; did not even know you had one.

I bought a #3 walnut T handle off of Russ Wolfe designed for my automatic transmission. Place a WTB ad for one for your AT?

Sue's Fastback has #1 in it, complete with the Wolfsburg crest, since it's got an AT in it.

I got one from mamotorworks like the black knob with the pebble top the 4th on the right and got the floor /defrost cables that fit the late beetles . It is difficult finding two items from the same place.

Those flat knobs VW put on the auto trans shift lever are the worst because they are so short at least for me there in no good way to grab and pull up on it to get it out of park or neutral. There were 7,10 &12 mm shafts . I got a late black one on the far right at least it's taller and has a better shape for pulling up . My 66 beetle had a tiny off white knob bugged me so much I replaced it with one Hurst put out in the 70's . I can't recall what my 68 Karmann Ghia had it was also a 4 speed .

Honestly, if you're thinking of going through that much trouble, why not just buy another knob?

Because I'm sort of a freak for keeping parts that are original to my car, and because I don't want to have to buy a bunch of knobs to find one without buggered up threads.

12MM X 1.5, maybe 1.75. I am not sure on the thread pitch. I can go out and check later today.

Do all Type 3 shifters have the same threads? I have a 72 MT with a stripped out shifter knob and I'd like to replace it. Am I able to purchase any Type 3 knob that looks good?

Yes, I think you can.

Yes, if it's not in this thread already, early 63 have the all-white knob too.

My old '63 Notch, built in 1962, had the original solid white knob.
Bought from the original owner.

Thanks!
