Does anyone recall ,is there supposed to be a small space , between bottom of steer wheel and top of turn/dimmer switch on 72 bus ? |
~3mm, confirm it with your Bentley manual. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Just talked to a guy that sez they are both metal ? ...I know the bottom one is the jagged one , sitting in the small recess I'm looking closer at it now , and it looks like the plastic washer is under the screw head , where it should be, as is the locker washer down below in the steering wheel ,I'll make the lil spring sandwich and call it good .
I think what threw me off was 2 little rubber? type very small washers , that turned up in my collection of current projects ,I thought maybe they were for the screws ... Thanks to All for the input ! |

washer 15 and 16 2 washers in TCash's foto 16 I'm fairly certain is the metal serrated washer , I believe 15 is an insulator washer of sorts ? Anyone know for sure ? |
Sounds right IIRC, the plastic one on top isolates the ring from the screw. the lower one locks the shoulder of the screw when tightened up. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'm thinking those 3 screws should have a rubber/fiber washer |

I've ripped apart every " BIC " pen in the house ...hardware store next , I'm not so much worried about that as if there are fiber washers to isolate everything , or does the plastic gizmo isolate the unit ...also what scares me is I found 2 rubber/ fiber ? teeny tiny wurshers , and I am wondering if I mislaid Th'other ? ! ? Thanks guyZ |

I'm working on a 72 Bus , I've misplaced 1 spring ...imagine that ! would some one line me out with the correct placement of horn parts ...I have , the 3 locker type washers in the 3 screw holes , got my screws ,plastic insulator etc. ,what I'm curious about is I found 2 yes only 2 rubber/ plastic/fiber washers the same size as the screws , ...did this setup use fiber washers on the 3 screw assembly somewhere , I looked at a diagram but didnt see the legend giving the names of the pieces ...thanks in advance ! |

Thought I'd share another way to remove a bay steering wheel without damaging it. On the metal inner area of the wheel, I drill two holes on either side of the nut and tap them.
Then you can thread in the appropriate bolts and use a puller under the bolt heads. (Ideally you'd probably want to drill holes in the puller for the bolts, but this worked fine and saved a bunch of time)

It seems to me that an important difference between the washer system and Aeromech's fancy puller is that the washers pull on the plastic (which is OK if you don't want to salvage the wheel) and the fancy puller pulls on the metal, not stressing the plastic.
Is that the case? |
FYI, the harbor freight bearing puller does not damage the plastic, only pulls on the metal parts. I have used this several times, very successfully.
The damage in the picture was from the washer method. My washers were inferior. |
Which Harbor Freight unit do you use.
FWIW, I have used my 3 jaw puller several times without drama? _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White
