Wouldn't it be more practical to attempt this with an elongated/supported pan?. Maybe add 2 feet for the interior. Has it been done?
I have always been interested in these, but I am not a Hobbit. I think 2 people would be better off bringing a nice tent towed in the single wheel along with all the other camping goodies. Or buy a westy, fwiw. _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

It wasn't an Popular Mechanics it was in mechanics Illustrated. The little bugger and the super bugger were two different vehicles by two different people. The super bugger was manufactured the little bugger was plans only. The company or person selling the plans is no longer selling them their website is down. I'm glad I got it set before he went out of business. And he had a whole bunch of other plans for different types of vehicles. Which is a shame because they were pretty cool.

This is a friend of my parents and he built this little bugger in my parents backyard patio. I got to help build it and ride in it when I was a kid. And now I'm building one myself but heavily modified. |
Holy crap that print is stretched. I have a set of the original lil bugger plans. The distance from the bottom front corner to the wheel well is 45 inches plus change, your side wall photo has 120"
I'm stretching our pan and wall another 12" from the plan to add a little room. Also thinking about a type 4 or corvair motor. Whats your plan to power your beast? |

Check out where they mounted the rack for the propane tank. How much fun would it be to drive around the country with a fuel tank AND twenty pounds of compressed propane six inched from your lap? I'm hoping everyone remembered to store the propane tank in the back before driving off. I'm sure they did.

Dan did the little bugger out of a shop in Costa Mesa CA in the early 70's. A guy he knew took the plans and copyrighted them out from under him and started selling them in popular mechanics.
He then came up with the super bugger which was wider and had two doors and the window above the driver / passenger seating. It was different enough that he was granted a patent on his new design.
He continued to do a total of 218 conversions up until 1979 when he closed his doors!
He now lives in Fallbrook and pretty much wants to be left alone.
I have the yellow and white one that the pics are posted on page 1 of this thread |

Why? The wind, for one thing. Camper buses had most of the same amenities--if not more.

Something tells me forward visibility is probably not very good. Could you even see a stop light out of that thing? |

You know, buying a camper bus might be a wiser choice.

We were up at the Northwest Vintage Show in Seattle Washington this summer and there was a SuperBugger. It was pretty cool. It won an award. There was a steady stream of onlookers all day. Here are a few pics that my son took.

The lil-Bugger article is in=Dune Buggies & Hot VWs dated January1976. There is a #48287 also, dont know its connection. Also have same mag with article converting vw to 2-cyls by a n-west college as a school project. I did this same thing about 5yrs earlier 1974 due to oil embargo, needed better mi,and mostly didnt have enuf parts/money to do a full eng, drove about 6 mo to work in-town,got around pretty good. Seriously thinking of doing another, have some ideas to test out. |

And this one is just a really bad fake!
These days of course we would say they were Photoshopped, but people were faking pictures LONG before Photoshop came along! (I've got a picture of my Grandfather with Charles Lindberg and Mayor La Guardia, we are pretty sure the only place they all got together was in my Grandfathers darkroom! |

I'd love to see her cook in the pouring rain and then go to sleep in an area that a monkey couldn't even f@$* a football in. |
