How worried should I be that the "top" is on the bottom? This must have been like this for the life of the time my father owned it. Would it as simple as un-clipping the rockers and flipping them?

My friend is a nitrous distributor and that was an empty bottle he had kicking around that he uses to fill customers small bottles. Surprisingly this was only $20 more to fill than one of those small 3ft bottles, so it seemed worth it.

And thanks Artifact. There's still a lot more work to do, but I figure after everything my old man has done for me the least I can do is get his car together the right way Laughing

Ohhh I did not see this thread until today, had no idea you were working on a 2nd beetle, and what a cool car/story it is!

Thanks for documenting the metal fabrication, rust repair... I plan to do this with my 57, body off. Probably this summer, after a lot of practice on the MIG with scrap... Smile

Keep up the good work. Thanks for 2 inspiring threads.

Made patch pieces for the holes. Tacked them completely in until I got the hole seam covered.

I then ground the welds down until it was smooth.

BAM and it's out. You can see the one I removed from the car (bottom one) was full of rust in the middle and along one of the edges. It was from mouse urine that soaked in the old cardboard trunk cover and rusted through.

It's weird seeing the car like this.

Nice R-code engine, not a lot of them around anymore. If you're going to run the domed 83's, don't fill the tank w/87 octane. This was a 2-year, high-compression engine ('64-'65) and a lot of owners blew them up by being cheap at the pump. That's why VW went to the 1600--you can run them on regular.

I guess this qualifies you for membership in The 1500 Club...

Yea ya know I kinda wish it was still all in one piece, but it's kinda cool the way it is. My uncles tell me stories of how back in the day after my dad built it everyone wanted to buy it. I guess my grandma used to be able to hear him a few streets away when he would come home Twisted Evil

We just bought some engine cleaner/degreaser at WalMart, using a hard bristled brush to get between the cooling fins and a power washer. Worked pretty good. Then as we took the motor I cleaned everything with carburetor cleaner.

I absolutely love it! Far better to be a bit different from the norm i reckon.

You cant replicate genuine history like that.

Enjoy it!
