After looking seeing this thread and considering my laminate is badly chipped I decided to start removing it and doing a custom stain on the wood. I took the original posters advice re using an iron to remove it.
Although this works good, it was taking too much time for my liking. I found out that if you use a propane torch and heat the laminate till it starts to burn and bubble slightly, then just a little more, the glue will create a pressurized pocket that pushes the laminate free of the wood.
It does not burn the wood and makes removal fast and easy.
When using the iron I was taking the laminate off in small pieces. Using the torch I was able to remove it in complete sheets. It also leaves less glue residue on the wood. Later {probably today} I will take some pictures of the process and post them. |
You purists will probably cry or at least leave your opinions on why we should not do this.
Time:
remove laminate 5 min,
sand wood 20 min
stain with ebony stain 5 min
clearcoat tommorrow, 10 min

I'm with izzardking on this. The generations of westy owners to come are gonna wonder what the hell we were thinking. So save what laminate you can so our kids can sell it on eBay to pay for college. _________________ 1985 Westy

Looks great, and I'm definitely going to take the peeling, chipped laminate off mine and minwax it or something... BUT didn't I read somewhere that you shouldn't pack insulation into the door/wall cavities because it'll trap condensation from your snoring body and rust the heck out of the bus from the inside out?? _________________ Cheers,

This is what I ended up with after delaminating all of the cabinets. I stained it all then put about 7 to 10 coats of Minwax polycrylic. I'm thrilled with the way it turned out.

Here are some pictures of what I ended up with after I delaminated all the cabinets. I stained them then put about 10 coats of Minwax Polycrylic clear coat on all of it. The work is not perfect, but the wood is distressed and I think it looks btter than what I would want off the shelf. I actually started filling in all the nicks and gouges but then decided to leave them. it looks just great that way. |
