I realize it's been a long time, but is there any update on this ? I was just reminded that I wrote an article for the 356 Registry about a visit I had w/ Otto in 1987;

https://www.porsche356registry.org/system/magazines/pdfs/000/000/173/original/295r.pdf?1396814917

page 16. sorry, no tech. details. I didn't have a good grip on who I was visiting. there was virtually nothing in print on his history at the time.
best

Yes, I have bought this very interesting magazine and it has indeed some nice pics and has a detailed story about the Berlin Rome racecars. But it's all in german:

HI there,
There is a german magazine about Old cars in General that shows an article over this Rom Berlin car. The story that goes with it unveil some details.....The Fletzenflieger is made with a chassis of another Berlin Rome car. Shocked Shocked It is written with the help of the PROTOTYPE museum who loand the car to get driven by the reporter.

All the remains of the Berlin Rome car found by GI's after the war and some very early engines ( like prototo"s from the pre war area) are sold with the remaining Berlin rome car to Mathé.. Shocked
The magazine is Oldtimer markt Februar 2010.
Some detailed picts are in it to from the Berlin Rome car, not the Fletzenflieger.

Best regards.

Your oil tank is a petrol spare tank. He sure made some money with his additives but not enough to have his own petrol company. The oil tank is the one right behind the seat.

And yes Castrol Rennöl was the one that was chosen for the carrera engines. today we use special diesel oil with all our fuhrmann engines because it can cope with high temperature

I find it somehow amusing that a man known for his reknown motor oil additives brand would have a shell sticker on his oil tank Wink

I have heard rumors only today that his cars were sold off quite cheap after he passed away, dunno if that is true though.

I'm sure he didn't have shell oil in that tank either! About the only oil used in the 4 cam engines at that time was Castrol R.

There was only about 3 dozen Vintage VW people in the Southern California area in 1982. We all cruised up for the Historic Car Races in Monterey in 1982, the featured marque being Porsche. We met Otto Mathe and checked out his Berlin to Rome race car up close. Porsche also brought over from Germany the 16 cylinder Auto-Union racer.

I just got an oval window torsion housing, but I am still looking for a split torsion or even earlier as the original car has a Kubel housing.

probably wont start construction for 4 to 6 months.
