Depends how it's wired, it's odd that the buzzer shuts off the radio, tried removing the buzzer from the fuse box? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I have my stereo set up to work when the key is in the ignition, but there's a small unwanted annoyance associated with it. When I open the door, the buzzer comes on and turns my stereo off. When I close the door the buzzer turns off and my stereo turns back on. Any idea how to avoid that? Can I get rid of the buzzer and still have the stereo work when the key is in? |

What you are missing is the great feature that if you put a male spade connector on the yellow switched wire from your stereo and plug it into the buzzer socket #85 from the ignition switch you will have an accessory position.
You can listen to the stereo with the engine off as long as you leave the key in the ignition. As soon as you pull it out, stereo goes off.
It's pretty easy to convert the buzzer to buzz if you forget the headlights on as well.
In fact you can do both.
Note though if you have a big high amp stereo use this wire to trigger a relay as it's a low amp circuit.

I've done that trick on more than one VW.
I could be wrong, but I don't think you'd need to relay it for just a CD player. I think that they draw all their power for running, playing, etc through the same source as the memory (usually the red wire). I think the keyed wire (usually yellow) is simply a trigger to turn on with the key, sort of a relay wire in itself. |
That sounds reasonable. Just to confuse things, some stereo's seem to have the yellow wire as the switched one, others use red.
You definitely need a relay if you have an older model where the buzzer wire is a ground.

go from +12 to a fuse (or from a fuse) to the bulb to the switch on the door (It makes ground) _________________ 82 Westy ☢, 66 Splitty ☮, 73 Type 181 ✠ |

ok so now we know where to find one on a jetta

does it it use the same sensor button on the door
that is used for the lights to work
i want to say mine worked when i first got the bus
but that was a long time ago
(haha maybe i ripped it out then & just dont remember) |
It tells you your key is in the switch so there is a circuit there and yes your dome light ground switch makes it buzz. I pulled mine, 'stgawdawful cacophony. _________________ 82 Westy ☢, 66 Splitty ☮, 73 Type 181 ✠ |

I've got the doo-boo-bee triple note chime in my 91 GTI. I think I'll leave it there and stick with the dying cricket for the bus. I'd like to open one up to see what the mechanism inside looks like. Ratwell must have a pic somewhere... _________________ Your car may do 0-60 in under 5 seconds, but can it sleep 4 and cook a meal?

Mine works. Then again, everything except the gas heater is in working order.
The previous owner took pretty good care of it, for all the electrical shit to be working. |

Ice Cream Truck song is a good way to describe it. 3 separate ascending notes, then repeat.
It is #12 in the fuse panel. Here is a diagram from the Fox Bentley...
Here's a close-up of the relay...
And here is a pic of it installed - notice how the end has a grille and a speaker. Pretty easy to identify.
When the IAC engineer was out last year and put the key in the ignition for the test drive, the look on his face was priceless. |

I had an '89 Fox! The chimes sound like an icecream truck song or something.
Is the Door Buzzer located in the fuse panel? I may try to get mine working as well, so I can spend some time with VDubtech having the key in the ignition and the door open just to hear the sound. |

Door Buzzer? Mine doesn't have it. What's it for - to alert you to the door being open when setting off??
Where are the mechanics of it, I'd like to have a look and see if any of it remains. _________________ Ombit

The buzzer on my '70 works. I think it's pretty neat. Brings back memories of the old bus my folks had in the 70s. |

The buzzers on my '74 and '79 both work, never bothered me. I guess I just don't spend a whole lot of time with the door open and the keys in the ignition. |
