No such thing as overkill on rods. YOu buy what you can afford if you are going to upgrade.
And if you are not going to upgrade, then I suggest take it easy abusing the engine.
Also, rods can be balanced on any tolerance. Just make sure which balance tolerance you are getting. Just because it says "balanced" does not mean much if you do not know what tolerance was put into it.
Balanced to 5 grams? Or balanced to 1/10th grams? |

check every part you buy, even if its from a performance shop like Berg Ent. you never know what can slip past in the shuffle. _________________ always seeking a better way

In a 130 hp 1904? ARP 2000's would be overkill.... for that matter, so would 8740's. If you're only looking to make 130 hp, you have no use for the low reciprocating weight H-beams offer since you won't be spinning the engine very fast to get there. Rebuilt stock rods are all you should need, or at the most, the Unitech rods CB sells.
I have the Unitech's in my turbo 1915, trust me they can take just about anything you can throw at them. Great rods. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

What about bolts? Is there and upgrade for the stock rod bolts?? I happen to have a set of GB190 rods, but they are not clearanced. maybe GB will take them on exchange, or modify as requierd? |
Call Berg and see what they say. They always boast about supporting customers who buy their products. Maybe they'll rebuild them for you to GB191 specs. As for rod bolts, most consider the ARP 2000 to be the best out there. |

I am in the process of collecting parts for a similar combo. My first choice would have been the H-beam style rods. But I settled for a set of Berg stroker clearanced stock rods. For me I look at what the engine's primary use will be as far as choices for engine components. IMO if its going to be a daily driver with the occasional trip down the local drag strip then the stock rods should do just fine. |

Whose H-beams?? Eagle Scat CB ???? |
I'd suggest you buy from an engine builder like DRD, ACE, Brothers, etc. Reason is, the (chinese) rods will need to be checked to make sure they are within specs BEFORE you bolt them on the crank. |

Nothing wrong with using a stock rod in this application. A stock rod is good for 175hp and 7,500rpm. |
X2. Stock rods will serve you well. Sounds like you are building a nice street motor so you don't really need the high rpm capabilities of an H beam rod. I'd go with a good set of rebuilts like from Berg or Rimco etc. Of course a new set of chinese I beams "may" cost less but I'd sure have them checked out to make sure they are within specs. |

Which after market rod would best suit my combo?? I want to build a 1904cc, but want to use something other than the stock rod. Looking at about 130hp. H-beam,or I-beam and why? Thanks DS _________________ ...and progress is not intelligently planned... |
