Thanks Wally. Yeah, I ended up doing most things, except the stitching of the upholstery. I usually stick to assembly work, lite interior stuff, minimal rust repair, suspension, and mechanical.
Our body and paint guy was way too backed up, so I decided to dive in myself. Last year he taught me alot by making me body work a 67 Westy. It was in the same condition as the Riviera. At first I was intimidated by the size of a bus and all the flat surfaces. But, after learning the basics, and what not to do's, it wasn't so bad. Just prepare for alot of sanding, dust, and sore arms.
Good luck with your bus. Be sure to take and post some pics as you go. If you have any questions, or need any help or advice, the samba is full of talented people that can share their experience. I'd be happy to help as well. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=355803 |

Hey guys. Thanks for all the great compliments. Means alot.
It feels good to put these cars back on the road
with a new run at life.
Hopefully it inspires other people the same as I get inspired from
other build threads. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=355803 |

^^^ thanks Kai^^^
Here is the final (well..maybe not final final) product.
I blended the body with some single stage acrylic enamel. The bus is mostly original paint, so only touch ups were done. Wesco did an awesome job of mixing the color.
I also corrected the lenses and painted the headlight buckets, painted the emblem silver white, fixed the hubcap clips, and installed new door seals.
The whole undercarriage was also ryno-lined, and all the rusty camper window screws were replace with stainless.
A-train gets credit for the wheel detail....can't come in the house with dirty shoes.... ...thanks trizzle.
From this.....
to this......
It'll be coming back in the future for some more work. The driver's dogleg, and door, plus a few other little spots here and there.
Overall, I thought it came out pretty good.

^^^^ yeah, good times. Some days you just gotta pull some all nighters.
Neighbors are cool though. One of them works from about 1am-9am, and the other stays up late, and smokes pot on his/her back deck in the middle of the night. Probably couldn't tell if he/she was getting high on that, or paint fumes coming from the garage at 3am
He bought one of the spiceracks we make. Didn't get a chance to see it mounted though. Also, I made a prototype "always missing" courtesy light lens, that came out pretty well. I'll have to get pics of that

Thanks to our friend Ken @ Kenny B's upholstery for hooking up
the new pads and stitching up new seat covers. Came out beautifully.
A-train stopped by for a few hours and helped with the wood flooring, assembling the rear bumper, and a bunch of other stuff. Deadline was coming up fast, and couldn't of made it without em'. The bus was still not even primered, and I had only 3 days left. Thanks trizzlean!

Yeah, fixing and fitting some of that camper interior back in was tedious......5:30 AM came fast especially when you have to be somewhere in a few hours. Funny how time flies......and all of the sudden you walk out of the garage and the sun is coming up. Fun as hell though until I got to where I couldn't think straight anymore....started hitting my head on everything and tripping over everything laying on the floor. Good times....I'm sure your neighbors love you keeping them up all night with that air compressor, hammers, saws running etc........all night.
I think the interior came out fresh in the end, nice work on that T-D Jenkins.
....Fun stuff.... _________________ I like VWs |

Noticed some oil leaks. So I took the motor out for a reseal, and to install some new push rod tubes. It was also a good time to detail the motor a little by painting the tin, clean up the wiring, and scrub down the engine compartment while it was out.
A stock oil bath air cleaner, and few other things would of been nice but I did the engine thing as a freebee, so I just worked with what it had came with on this one.

Man you are tearing it up on this. Im glad to see you building the bus up in 'Readers Rides' instead of the split bus forum. Some of those guys in there feel nobody will see it unless its in the split forum.
Good job on bringing this bus back. |
Thanks Skim. I get excited seeing other people's build threads, so I finally thought I would post one. Glad to see people are into it. I was a little apprehensive about posting, especially in the split bus forums. Purist can get pretty nit-picky there. Plus I feel a little more at home in the reader's ride area.
Anyway, whenever I was at the grocery store, I would thumb through various rod/muscle car mags to read the bodywork, and paint tips when there was an article. It was free education, and cool to see alot of those guys still doing it the oldschool way with common tools.
I never really tackled anything this extreme though. Pan halves in a bug, or outer rockers on a bus were about the biggest. Nothing to it but to do it I guess _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=355803 |

The doors ended up being toast at the bottoms.
Didn't have time to order parts, so I ended up making some small patch panels with the vice, and hammer. I coated behind with some rust proofer. Hopefully they won't rust out again.
A little filler and they should look alright. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=355803

Welded up the side air scoop holes.
Also straightened and painted the bumpers silver white.

After getting the bus rust free. I started on the body work.
I decided to completely cover the door seems and then cut them back in for a flatter look. I heard hot rod guys do it this way sometimes, and have notice cars out there where the seams from fender to door, and so on, look bubbled, not flat when adjoining the next.
