//You make a good point Mark. That would be a heavy load to run the Coil Packs off the ignition switch, which could shorten the switches life. Here is a diagram showing how I have decided to eventually modify mine by adding one more relay to isolate the Fuel Pump. An alternate method would be to replace the power steering relay with a higher amperage one, and group the three loads on it (MAF, Coils, Injectors). But these 30A relays are only around $6.00 each, so I'll just add one.//

What's the final wiring diagram then?

Hahaha exactly. I literally had to replace everything that could/did wear out on this westy. Brakes, brake hoses, coolant/heater hose, slave cylinder, front heater fan, CVS, etc so it's been a long month... but I took your advice and just extended the exhaust tip another foot with some SS I had laying around.

Ya it's really in r&d mode right now. I might end up switching to a PWR water to air like I have in my bug, but time will tell! And, this one was free sooo... haha

love seeing another AEB DIY 1.8T out there.. it's an underdog in the swap game..
yer also going to want to get that tailpipe to exit out from under the van.. that'll heat up (and fume) the compartment in traffic..

also log your IATs and I don't think (IMHO) that you're going to be happy with an air/air intercooler there.. but that's all personal and subjective what makes one person happy and another not..
but I run an Air/water exchanger. sure more complicated but keeps my IATs very stable and never more than 30* over ambient.
had a friend with air/air and fans would heat soak on longer hills and occasionally go into a limp mode.

Thanks man! Here's a few more photos the way I did things. I used a a4 intercooler. I'm still going to either add a scoop to direct air, or bolt on 4 6" fans. Once I get some more miles on it and log IT temps, I'll make my decision.

Good idea! I just got it running 2 weeks ago, but now I'm redoing all the brakes,CVS, hoses etc! So no real miles on it yet but that's a good tip! I don't need any fires!

Unrelated issue - has anybody had problems with excess pressure buildup in the gas tank (Syncro) from the leak detection pump or insufficient flow through the charcoal canister? I’m using a SAH kit and the fuel sprays everywhere when I open the gas cap.

I just went through this with my TDI install. Those gear reduction starters are an amazing upgrade that I now recommend for all VW engne types.

Hey guys, thanks, I got it fired up last night! After cleaning every wire there is, it was still the starter. The TDI starter did the trick. And John, I'd love to see your rig regardless! Let's meet up

the 1.8T isn't a high compression (at start up) engine.
it gets it's power from boost pressures.

you either just need a new starter, a new battery cable a new ground or all of the 3.

Good point, make sure the transmission ground strap is in place/installed also.

of course you can get a starter adapter and a new type starter anyways.. but it's not necessary with the 1.8T.

I have a 1.8T in my 91 done by Stephan's. Looks like you live in Gig Harbor. I am located between Fox Island and the Arletta Store.

If it helps you are welcome to take a look at how he did his work on mine. If it would help to have them side by side I could bring it to you as well.

Mine is a Syncro so may be different.

Currently available most anytime.

John

What Adaptor did you use?

Christopher,
I too used most of your well thought out provided information for my transplant. The first time I turned the key it started. 😋👍👍. Just need to finish the exhaust system and then off to the referee.
