Hello Mr. Slug, very well done and an inspiration for sure. I just purchased one of the US made fiberglass Schwimmwagen bodies, and I am wondering which plastic model it was you used to take your measurements from? I see a picture of it near the start of this thread, but wonder if you know which size scale etc.
Appreciate the help.
CHeers,

Even if I were lucky enough to buy a real one, I think a replica has its place. The real ones are so expensive as to be out of reach of the regular
enthusiasts. I understand there is a company in the United States that make replica Kubels, and are going to start making Schwimmers. I'd like to do a similar thing here in the UK - make replica 166s available either complete, or in a sort of self build/self finish kit form.
I understand that the US built replica 166s, will also be 2 wheel drive.
Thanks again, Regards Mr Slug. |
Just come across this site whilst looking for a replica schwimmwagen.
Amazing build of the VW166 - wish I was that clever in fabricating the body.
However, if you are to manufacture a tub, then I for one, would be interested, as that is the part I would struggle with & I would prefer a steel tub to a fibreglass one. |

Thanks Mike - I have it.
A really nice interesting little film - well worth buying one if you don't have it and like your classic VWs[/quote]
I brought the disk along to my "away from home terminal" today. It is pretty slick. One of the "animations" shows all the sections of the schwimmer drive train, one at a time, being "built up" and turning.
Someone who was prepared to fabricate the cases would have most all the info needed to do the four-wheel drive
All-in-all, a worthwhile purchase

And great to 'see' you again my friend - so helpful in the past, and still continue with your experience and advice.
I have not as yet made or fitted those panels - I do notice that the engine gets hot and it is yet another job that has to be tackled.
Thank you for those pictures - they will help enormously.
Thanks again - regards, Mark. |

Hello Mark,
nice to "see" you again.
I notice you still don't have any cover plates in the engine compartment to keep the heat off the fuel pump, carburator, ignition etc... Didn't you have any problems on a longer distance ride so far?
In the original engine compartment the exhaust pipes and cylinderheads are separated from the rest to be directly cooled by the air-flow of the fan. And to get the heat straight off the engine.
Sorry, I don't have pictures of the cover plates alone...
For some reason, those special cover plates are not mentioned in the spare parts list. Maybe they are supposed to belong to the body itself, like mudguards, bumper bar, gearbox cover below the rear seats and so on...
My special advice: try to find an adequate passenger |

Here you go -
The prop mechanism is one of the most intriguing part of the car - and mostly because it is pretty simple affair - genius in fact.
Here, outside rear, in the transport position. The unit is held up by a spring mechanism (much the same as an 'up-an-over' garage door), It also has leather straps as additional support.
The casing contains a triplex chain running over two sprockets, taking the drive from a simple oneway dog to the propeller. The dog engages when the unit is swung down. This is done from inside the truck with the steel rod - I learned from a real 166 owner not to do this with the engine running as it can snap chains.
Here, inside rear, behind the engine pully is the drive shaft and bearing that transmits the drive outside. The rubber cush drive is moved up the splined shaft to engage the pins on the engine pully.
Also the spring balance mechanism can be seen - the movement is transfered via a short chain, and puts pressure on that spring in either the 'up' or 'down' position.
General view showing the relationship that exists between internal and external componants.
.........maybe I should change my name to 'Bob'
