I've had several of these bags. From those I took up to 20k ft in Bolivia, here in the Cascades, and car camping. Durable, light, and warm - as warm as you want one. https://featheredfriends.com/ |

Old thread I know.
Bed is always deployed in my Syncro, with a bedspread on top, tucked in around the edges.
A polyfill comforter for use in moderate temps, or Swedish military surplus wool blanket which is stowed under the rear seat.
For cold weather, a Cabela's -20* canvas bag w/ flannel lining, used as a comforter.
In extra-cold conditions below zero, bag is zipped up to keep my toes warm. This has proved satisfactory on several occasions at -22* F. Frost was on the bag, but I was toasty. _________________ =BCE56=

lol!!! I hope I don't run into you in the middle of the night on your way to the bathroom, I would probably think I'm getting abducted! And please don't ask me to unzip it for you...
It actually makes a lot of sense. Please report back after some use. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Our two zip together sleeping bags have nylon type exterior shells. I inherited a nylon "seabag", very much like the canvas model the USN issued me a long ways back. The sleeping bag(s) easily slide right into it, w/ enough room for two pillows. This sure makes it easy to "make the bed" when its time to break camp and move on down the road. |

After spending years with the zip together down mummy bags, and later a pair of summer weight synthetic mating mummy bags we splurged and bought this bag this winter.
It is a Kelty Supernova double bag. The bottom of the bag is synthetic fill, and the top is down. The lining is a flannel-like polyester and I really like the pillow pockets. There is plenty of footroom, and no zipper in the middle! The bag is heavy at about 10lbs, but it does compress pretty small with a compression stuffsack. Retail is $280, but I paid half of that delivered to my door. The e-tailer that I purchased from (sunnysports.com) is currently out of stock on them.
We also picked up one of these:
A Pacific Outdoor Products double-wide 2-1/2" thick self inflating pad. This was an opportunistic score on www.steepandcheap.com for $80. Retail is $200, and I don't think that Pacific Outdoor even makes them anymore. The pad is actually a little too wide by the Westy closet. I'm debating attempting to alter the width and reseal the seam with a very hot iron.
Or, maybe I'll just sleep on it. We're looking forward to many comfortable nights in the Westy this year. _________________ '87 Westy Weekender - daily driver on salt-free roads

We replaced our bags recently with a couple of zip together bags from LL Bean. I got two of different warmth so we could taylor it to the temperature (warmer bag on top in winter). I was looking for the lightest smallest rectangular bags I could find with a flannel lining. These are not bad, not quite as warm as they claim but smaller than some and comfortable. The ideal would be something like this in down but I couldnt find anything for a reasonable price.

While I always use a sleeping bag when camping (I think I have 5 alone for me), I second the down comforter. We have one at home (L.L Bean) and it's just great. A fleece blanket below you perhaps and you will be warm. |

The best deal I've found on sleeping bags is at SAMs club. Every so often they have Colman brand 0 degree bags for cheap. Then a mr. Buddy to warm it up in the mornng is the perfect cheap setup. _________________ 89 Bostig powered syncro westy |

Gotta say, Big Agnes synthetic fill Bags are the goods! They are much more packable without the insulation on the bottom. I have a 2" memory foam pad that I just roll up w/ bag inside (burrito style). Takes 2 seconds to prep for sleepy-time. _________________ 2WD 86 Westy

The ever present 4 sleeping bags, 4+ pillows and clothing bags for 4 people (myself, my wife and 2 kids) was the motivating factor that started me on the quest for a hightop several years ago. A real side benefit is the abilty to have a decent, comfortable mattress up top as well. _________________ NAHT hightop availability May 18 2023 -

I'm usually afraid to use my catalytic propane heater all night so I throw on a bunch of down. I make the bed with regular ol' sheets then I throw on a full rectangular down bag, rated to 20 deg. and then a down comforter. Works well down to about 15 deg. or so. Wife and I can snuggle and keep warm.
That 20 deg. down bag is from LL Bean. As I said, it's fully rectangular and it zips together with a mating bag if you have two. I've had mine for well over 20 years and the down is kinda beat down so it doesn't keep me as warm as it used to. I believe they still make that bag as well as a 0 deg. version. Good quality stuff and packs very small.
As for that 3 pc. military bag the ad says, 'Due to weight limitations, this item cannot be shipped by air.' Holy crap! What does that thing weigh? I know that it really doesn't matter when you can throw it in your van but, damn. Weight and bulk tend to go hand in hand. I'd like to be able to fit a couple of folding chairs behind the seat too. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

CO (carbon monoxide) IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE.
It's presence is what uses up the hemoglobin so that the O2 can't attach. It's not because the O2 goes down, it's because CO has a greater affinity (its stickier) to hemoglobin and as the big bully, well O2 can't connect BUT don't ever foul yourself CO IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE! p.s. I don't understand why anyone would have a CO2 monitor????I come by this knowledge honestly as a retired registered respiratory therapist. We had a big discussion in another thread (Stealth).
I still like my sheets and use my flattened sleeping bag as a blanket. I don't like to be confined, even with 2 bags zippered together. I was the same way when I had my crusing sail boat. I guess it really depends on the decision maker tho. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

I use a 2 person bag from Big Agnes in my camper. It fits perfect and keeps me nice and warm. I believe they have 2 two person bags to choose from. The advantage to the BA bags is that they do NOT have insulation on the bottom of the bag. Instead they have a pocket in which you place your mattress /pad. For my camper, I keep a 2 inch memory foam pad in the bag pocket and just roll it all up and store behind the rear seat.
I also have 2 of the Army modular bag systems and they are awesome. Amazing deal for the price. Just too constrictingto use in the VW. |

We searched far and wide for a nice double bag that would be warm enough for cold nights in the Sierras and Nevada desert and came across this at a local shop: http://www.amazon.com/High-Peak-Foot-Degrees-Sleeping/dp/B000TM91WM
Otherwise, as people have said, you can usually zip two rectangular bags together. You might be able to construct a nice multi-season bag this way, a super thick one on one side that you can put on the top side in winter, and a thinner one on the other that you can put on the top side when it's warmer. |

I'm sorry but that is the biggest piece of marketing BS I've ever seen. |
It's worked for me. I've thru-hiked the AT, PCT and CDT. I go ultralight weight, and except for a few nights in a late spring blizzard in the San Juan Mtns. I stay nice and toasty. _________________ '85 Cabriolet (Margo)
