I don't know where you came up with that two piece strap arrangement, why it's welded up that way, it looks like it's a home brew, patched up set up.
Taking a quick look at this strap that I manufacture, you can easily see how it could be quickly cut, shortened, and the end re-bent , drilled to accommodate any diameter muffler & hold it tight to the upper saddles.
IF--you cut it too short, it wouldn't be an issue as all is you would have to do is use a longer strap bolt to pull it tight to the saddle.
It may be difficult to use that patched strap that you have to get the same results--it may not work as I have described. _________________ T.K. |

Do just as I suggested.
Shorten up the strap.
Cut the end off, duplicate the bend, drill a new hole.
Slack will disappear. _________________ T.K. |

Now you're going to make this pretty simple task difficult.
Cut the end off of the straps , put another bend in it to duplicate what you just removed,
drill a hole, it's all done but the crying.
But, this can be only done with the solid straps I build.
Not the doubled up, rot off of the van in a year, Chinese copies of the original straps.
Then your stuck.
Let's see what you have. _________________ T.K. |

I have new straps I was going to use, but isn't the end piece welded? are you suggesting welding a new stopper piece further up the strap? |

The answer is so simple, you'll bonk your forehead with your hand.
Shorten up the strap a hair.
Done.
If the strap you have is pretty maggoty, I custom manufacture heavy duty straps for a situation just like this. _________________ T.K. |

Hey guys,
Its time to replace my stock muffler on my 1991 vanagon 2.1 and I have picked up the walker quiet flow as a replacement. When setting on the stock brackets i noticed the muffler is too small for my brackets and straps. There is about half inch of play. Has anybody had this experience and if so what was your solution? I was thinking of some material that could act as a spacer under those hot temperatures. Thanks! |

About 80 bucks, lifetime warrantee, no shipping to pay. |
The lifetime warranty is only good if you remember to remove and keep the original sticker off the muffler. You will also need the receipt. Maybe some places aren't so picky but around here a Walker warranty is pretty much junk. But hey, I am only on my third muffler on my truck after 28 years and have never needed to replace anything but the tail pipe on either my 91 Multi or my 87 Syncro. |

Any mufflers i replace i've used one for a '70's Ford maverick-6cyl. Turned down exit pipe but u need to add the flange in input , position muffler first then markflange position to muffler. I then put a couple tacs on, remove and finish weld. Longest lasting one was on 12 yrs when sold and are Maremont (?Spelling) brand. Also very quiet. |

A lot of what Walker sells, especially in the way of hangers will mean you end up with a real butcher job if you use them. Where would that hanger be suspended from? I have seen people suspend such hangers from the body and I can guaranty you that doesn't work.
I have Walker pipes on several of my rigs but all my clamps are either factory or custom, none are Walker junk. |

Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Is this the part you guys are ordering for the 2.1 (22485), and does it require the brackets shown?

Looks as if Walker doesen't manufacture a muffler for an 82 air-cooled Westy. Would it be wise/ not so wise to use the #22392 they show in the picture?
It appears to be the same configuration as the air-cooled mufflers are...a flange on one end and just a small straight pipe on the other.
Besides the world reversing its rotation....whats the downside on installing a muffler thats not designed for a particular vehicle. |

If you go to the manufacturers website, you will actually see part numbers and sketches. They are round like the originals.

Edit** Is it a round or square muffler you are referring too? That is a great price!
I see a lot of people retrofit other mufflers on vans and they don't have the same clearance as the stock muffler. They hang down a lot more below the carrier bar. The stock mufflers fit up tight and provide more clearance. I got this van and someone had put an aftermarket muffler on and it didn't fit right at all. Better to buy the right part for the application in this case.
This looks like the right one. The picture on Amazon isn't right.
|
I'm almost sure it's a round muffler and the picture on Amazon is just a generic pictures
I read somewhere in this forum that is a perfect fit and replacement.
Will post pictures Monday or Tuesday when I get the muffler delivered |

<<A question about the brackets. Do the stock mounts fit this muffler or is a after market set/home made version the way out.
I know the original post was for an earlier model but the Walker Exhaust 22485 Quiet-Flow3 Muffler should fit nice on me 2.1. Anyone have any experience?>>
The Walker mufflers are a little bit smaller in diameter then the stock VW muffler
The upper saddles will accept them with no problem, but this leaves a big gap between the muffler and the lower strap.
I've had the answer for tis problem, and have had the solution for at least 10 years.
I've been manufacturing heavy duty straps that are a little bit shorter than will fit to any muffler & hanger anyone has to offer for the vanagon.
The secret is only in the strap bolt length.
That's it---
And any after market muffler will fit into the stock Vanagon upper saddle with my heavy duty muffler strap.
Problem solved, All Done. _________________ T.K. |
