That or mentioning it does help with responses. |

The OP needs to add his van info as a sig line, please. Nowhere in this thread does he say his rig is an aircooled. I had to learn that in another thread he put up. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

I use a '70's ford maverick-6cyl muffler-Maremont brand, others may be as good, last one lasted 12yrs. Have to add input flange and orient position as the output is a turned down outlet=before welding flange. |

for what its worth my point of view, go find an express exhaust fitting centre and ask the man or woman to find a muffler box similar size in old stock. They will be glad to be shot of it, the mark up on mufflers is huge and they may even help fit it. Try an independent if one is in your area or for all you Samba members send dimensions etc to my good friend Neil at the Action Exhaust Centre in Blackpool UK www.actionexhaustcentre.co.uk and he will do his level best to help you out and will parcel up and post worldwide. He has loads of old stock silencers/mufflers and is knowledgeable about all things exhaust.Telephone is 00441253751555 but remember the time zone difference!!
Just a recommendation for a genuinely nice guy, hes not a VW man and wont touch fitting on rear engined stuff but will help on a supply only basis. tell him Mark in Fuerteventura sent you for "mates rates" prices! _________________ CGLI qualified body repair and refinish tech

I have had that same Ford F-150 muffler on one of my 1.9s for over five years now. Sounds good, fits nicely and was cheap. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Thanks for the info. It's currently just straight piped, so I'm looking for something that will quiet it down some. |

Cherry Bomb glass pack with some stock exhaust flanges welded to the ends of it works very well, and you'll know the engine running.
Cost?
Maybe if you shop a little $20 bucks. _________________ T.K. |

I Have.. I cobbled a muffler together from NAPA, I had the end that attached to the Cat, and walked into NAPA told em it was for a 91 vanagon 2.1.
Came out with a walker magnaflow, some clamps, and some stainless steel ribbon to hang it with.. cost.. 51.00
Worked out till I could find a real one in a used yard.. kinda loud.. lots of free flow performance.
That one is free for the taking. Up here in Amesbury, Ma..

I just bought a muffler intended for a mid 80's Ford F150. I have not had a chance to mount it yet (I'm waiting for flanges to weld on). It is 26" long and 6" in diameter, so it should fit just fine. I bought it because, A: it was not expensive and B: because I have a Subaru 2.2L and this muffler should be free flowing since it was designed for a 5.9L engine. |

When 1/2 way thru my recent 4000 mile trip I had to replace my muffler in Pensacola. No choice. I was fortunate the Muffler shop sent me off to an experienced vintage VW shop to make an adapter and then went back to the Muffler shop and they welded on a new muffler that they had to adjust. Don''t think that its any lower, its up nice and tight and the price was really good (compared to what I would have paid in Cd)
Shortly thereafter I made the decision to head back to Cd. I was tired of paying money to be cold. Came home and stayed cold. It was a good decision as Houston had a snowstorm the day after I left there and South Miami Beach was only in the 40's and that was F not C. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

You certainly could if you don't have to worry about a visual. I think on a 2.1 I would want to stick to something very close to the original as the stock set up is pretty good. You can get most of the parts in stainless from companies that do Subaru conversions.
If you have a 1.9 the set up was not as nice as a 2.1 and as far as I am concerned anything that works and will give dependable service is at least or better than stock. I have a glass pack on my 83 1/2 and it seems to work fine. |
