(just a side note) We always used a different vehicle to take the kids to the vets so they wouldn't associate the Westy with unpleasant vet visits.

l knew it might be an issue going in, but we had no choice, and the biggest of our furry overlords was already over a year and a half old when we got him.
the kitten, was less of an issue.

The thing with getting cats comfortable traveling in the Westy is to start young.
Maybe it also has to do with the breed, some cats seem to be more adventurous than others. Abyssinian cats are known for outgoing nature.
We started the Abbys when they were both still kittens. Their first major road trip was at 9 months to the very first Syncro Solstice! _________________ Currently:

I'm also sorry MsTaboo.
My wife and I have had and lost numerous cats , sometimes very traumatically. It sucks but its also part of pet ownership. Adopting a new one seems unfaithful but can be very therapeutic although I'm personally getting to where I'm not sure I want to go through the ups and downs again. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

It's a heartbreak going back looking at pictures so have had a hard time posting this.

We travel with our dog but have met camping cats on occasion, like this encounter near Mammoth Cave.

You can see the carrier we use to keep our kitties safe while driving in this picture.
It rests on the folded out bed with the rear section jammed under the a/c cabinet to hold in place.
We've had a couple panic braking situations with deer and the carrier stayed in place. The kitties got a little shook up but unharmed.
There's enough room for a small hard sided cat carrier that has they're litter box that they like to sit on and they have several towels for padding.
It takes up some room but it's worth it to keep them safe. They are far too active to let roam free! _________________ Currently:

The possibilities of crashing, or unpredictable behavior, are indeed on my mind. We always carry two collapsible carriers in the van when we have cats, so we have the option to crate them if necessary. We've done that a few times.

Do you worry about what could happen to them in a crash? Or if they panic and try and hide by your feet in the pedals?
I ask because once I had to take my cat to the vet in an emergency situation. He hates traveling in the van and always freaks out when we take him to the vet, so we use a carrier.
This one time I came home and found him literally near death so I just bundled him up in a blanket and tore off for the vet. He was so agitated that he ignored his pain and started scrambling around the van and in and out of my feet. Luckily I didn't have to panic stop or anything but I hate to think what could have happened.
(When I got to the vet he found even more energy and bolted out into the parking lot. I had to take a lot of scratching to catch him and get him inside. He recovered after a few days in critical care and is fine now!) _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS
