I've heard several stories like that, but you probably had the tools and knowledge to fix common problems on the road if it became needed. Like I mentioned, my engine knowledge is not too deep. My ex-brother-in-law was the mechanic and VW expert in our family, but it's very unlikely he'll come along on the trip.
Sorry for taking this thread off-course, but I do thank you for the suggestions. Basically I just wanted to also thank the community here for their willingness to help out other T3 owners |
I flew down, and drove what is now my wife's Fastback over a long weekend. No tools or cell phone, over a holiday weekend (4th of July, 1989). I stopped and got gas in St.Louis Mo (about my half way point), and the car wouldn't restart. Since at the time it had a MT in it, I pushed it back to the fence, then went forward, and started it up that way. It was a long 1213 mile trip in an unknown car, but it made it. When I stopped for the night, I backed the car up on a hill, in case I needed to push start it again (I didn't). I also didn't shut it off until I got home. |
Sorry to nag nerfer, but I keep wondering when you'll get your fasty home! How many miles to your Dad's from your place? Bob went 1213 miles! I've been renting a tow dolly to haul my recent VW purchases home. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Hey David,
Sorry, the thread isn't dead, I just finished the initial crazy drive to get the car completed to "daily driver" status and it's now got to take a little bit of a pause as I get my house to daily driver status!
The guys at Stoptech are great - this is a centric performance oem replacement caliper, but the disc is was made specifically. I wonder if it was a generic size for them though and whether it would be easy for anyone else to get....I'll find out.
Cheers,
Neil.

I'd be willing to throw some cash their way if they can hook up an old school 'dub!

Saturday was an exceptionally busy day. I left the house at 7am to head to ES Motorsports where my good friend builds and stores his drift cars. His head mechanic, Brad, had offered to do a day's blitz on the car and get through some stuff that a full race shop would be useful for.
I'll let the pics tell most of the story but the achievements were as follows:
New ball joints and tie rod ends in front. Removed spindle and arms and fab'd a piece to patch the rust I had one arm - Brad did a gorgeous job. While the parts were all off I cleaned, stripped, repainted them all and installed the slotted rotors Stoptech made. All the bearings got repacked to go in these rotors. Front end is looking great, just shocks to get.
I had ordered the shift bushing and coupler as mine were both shot. This has made an incredible difference. My shift rod was also badly rusted as it had never been fully greased (per service manual). Wire wool dealt with most of the rust, for the rest they had some chemical stripper that did a lovely job, it now looks new and has been re-greased. You should have seen how much grease the PO had used in the ball socket for the shifter. I scraped out a tennis ball sized lump by the end of it.
Adjusted rear drums and e-brake
Sandblasted my wheels
That was a full day by the end of it.
Welding....
Haha this is awesome...not supposed to happen....
Other toys there...

Hi all,
Who knows if anyone is interested in this stuff, but I guess I'll just keep posting the little projects as I do them. I guess in the end I'll get to a completed car and it'll be a cool record of it all.
The project this week has basically been "future proofing" the floor pans of the car. There was a good bit of surface rust and I knew it needed to be taken care of prior to the car build continuing - with regard to the floor this would continuation is the sound deadning I want to apply. I couldn't do this to a bad foundation.
I removed the carpets and took them to the carwash - the dirt removed from them was incredible. They look a million times better now and I will not have any reservations about securing them in place.
The floor had some decent surface rust. The pic below is after a good amount of sanding, after which I moved to an angle grinder with a wire brush wheel. It basically stripped off everything. I masked around the pan, washed, vac'd, brake cleanered, wiped with acetone and laid down a rust preventing primer - the matte black.
Finally, today I put the first coat of a green that is as close to the color of the car as I could find. I considered just doing the pan black, but I think the similar green looks good - it's never really going to be seen anyway! It looks a bit bright in the picture, but dries a lot darker.
Anyway, thats the project right now. I'll clear in in the next few days and then the B-Quiet Ultimate will go down.
Have a good Friday

Parts all ordered...I have an ordering online disease - I go to buy balljoints and all of a sudden my cart is at $250. Shift boot, trunk carpet, shift bushing, tie rods, trim pieces... haha. |

Booted up the car for Saturday morning Cars and Coffee in Irvine and left it in the garage to warm up while i ate a banana inside. Smelt gas about 5 mins later in the kitchen, weird, not using the oven.....Shit, I smell GAS.
Opened the door into the garage to find what I can only guess to be 3-5 gallons of gas over the entire garage floor. Turned off car, panic'd, ran around a bit uselessly then shoved the car into the courtyard. NOT how I wanted to start the day.
The next 6 hours were spent actually doing great work that needed to be done. I was under the car and replaced all the hoses, found that the pump negative wire was not only exposed, it was connected by about 3 threads....not dangerous at all..right?? So the terminals were replaced with insulated ones and the wholelot was shink tubed.
Also installed a steering damper while I was under there. Good day.
Sweet wiring!
Getting better
Old Steering D was weird. The tops of the bracket had been bent down really well to essesntailly lock the bolt in place. Took me a while maipulating a 5lb and and screwdriver to straighten it all.
Now its all sweet and redone! Tonight's fun is a now solid shift coupler and test fitting the 195 tires, then on the wire brushing/sanding the interior pan completely to remove all surface crap and repaint.
How was everyone elses weekend?

Yes. I like. Ordered a lone 195, 65 today to throw on and see if it fits. That'll be a funny looking car.
I'll take advantage of the wheels being off. I'm sandblasting and having them
Powdercoated a gunmetal. Think it'll look great with the dark green.

Pace beside your wife, have her read you how fast you are going compared to her in a real car, over your cell phones.
Or, use a GPS, or drive by one of those Photo Cops that tell you how fast you are going.
It's just a few MPH, and one of those things that add character.
If you ever put your car back to 100% OG, it would be nice to have to not recalibrate the speedo, right? |

Thanks Bob!
150 miles in it this weekend...Took a little fast lane excursion on the 405, pretty awesome.
It's not super happy at idle when I start, never stalls, but sure acts like it's thinking about it. Plenty info on here about that though, gotsta do some reading! |

Yes, you have to recalibrate your speedometer for the front tire size. This can be done using a hand held GPS, or going to a speedo shop and having it done. The key to it all is knowing how far yours is off, then adjusting to it. Most of the time, they are about 5 to 10 mph off, and usually 2 to 4 tenths of a mile on the odometer (depending on the actual speedo unit). Since you've already got 145' on the front, your speedo is off (fronts are supposed to be 165's as well). On both of my Notchbacks, I'm running 205-65's to keep the rear trans gearing the same as stock. I don't know if you can fit that size of a tire with those rims under the rear fenders, without raising the rear suspension up (it'll be close). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

After swimming through the tire info for a long time, it seems a lot of people run lower sidewall / lower diameter tires than stock. The handling benefits are obvious and attractive but primarily for me it opens up better brand tires in general. However, are any of you working to compensate for the (sometimes) large difference in speedo? 10-15% is a pretty big difference.
The car has the 19mm offset EMPI 8's and I'd like to keep them, so to move to wider rubber (currently 145 front and 165 rear fitting well) I'd have to drop that sidewall.
I promise I'm not trying to start another tire debate! Just wondering if anyone is compensating for speedo error, let alone the higher load on the engine.
Cheers,
N |
