Meaning aftermarket new- not factory, right Shortride? |
Pre 1961 the reinforcement brackets are Black. '61 and up are supposed to be L91 silver. These are the colors whether there aftermarket or factory. The ones I bought are new but exact copies of the factory ones. |
That's what I was asking- because my factory original brackets on my '63 were painted silver- not zinc like you bought. If you had NOS VW-made brackets- they would be silver or black painted.
I bolded your text because most aftermarket companies don't give a rip about what should be- and I've never seen a company give you a choice- let alone the right shade of silver. I hope you are using German bumper brackets (or at least WW) if you are assembling bumpers right now (especially the rear one).
By the way- those reinforcement brackets came out nice! |
I'm guess but I would think the after market manufacturer plated them because it may be hard to sell rusted parts off the shelf and plating is cheaper than painting in manufacturing quantifies. _________________ Pearl White 1966 Sedan

what color should the bumper reinforce brackets parts be on a 1958 type 1 should they be black like the brackets or silver like the back of the bumper ? thanks |
IMHO they should be the same color as the bumper tubes and mounting brackets.
My very reliable ex-VW partsman told me all replacement bumpers came with black everything except silver backside of the bumper and further confirmed when we opened my boxed NOS one. |

For 1965 on the single blade Euro bumper and the Deluxe Towel rack bumper for Europe and all Canadian standards (1200 Customs) The blade bracket is only two piece instead of the U.S. deluxe blade bracket which has the third reinforcement piece welded in-between. So yes the brackets are different and the color.

obviously you mean 3 layer rear bracket and not 2 layer front bracket. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017

You mean 61 and up on deluxe is L91 silver, and standard L328 steel gray.

wasn't aware of that- didnt get standards in the USA- you in Canada? Please post pics of the differences! |

No, I'm in central Ca. near the coast. I do have a 65 111 that was built almost like a Canadian standard (called a 1200 Custom) sans a few different items. L-328 looks like this;

Black on a 1958. This pic is an original 1960 and they were still using black.[img][/img]
The ad is for a 1961 bug and shows the silver brackets. |
