12 year report. Van still runs great. no transaxle issues. one timing belt fail at 60k. Still beating most traffic! Still love camping in CO!! _________________ Transaxles Rebuilt, Repaired and Re Geared 25 years. www.MRGASRebuilds.com |

Nice job.
Is there still a thread on vwvortex on this? I couldn't find it.
Curious what you ended up doing with the IC.
Did you go water? Still have the IC in the same place I see. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Update! 5 years still going strong! over 45k on this now. only maintenance items and tune up once. Starts right up every time. Lots of reliable Power. good mileage averaging 21mpg loaded.

Here is what I did with my TDI air-water set up. The grill will form very easily when heated with a heat gun. I am now running a Gowesty bumper and it looks even better. I purposely left the top open so I can spray bugs off. Hope this helps

Out of curiosity, what sort of IAT do you see compared to ambient say running down the highway on an 85 degree day? Clean install. Thank you. |
I am not sure yet. I am adding sensors and gauges for the inlet/outlet temps in the near future. I can tell you that if I flip the pump off I can actually feel a difference. |

I really like the 50* install and I have alot of 50* conversion parts, the things that make this upgrade difficult is the modified intake from 2~3 intake sources
is there an aftermarket flange that one could build a SRI (short Ram intake) available out there? I'm not as familiar in the newer H2o tuning parts market.
beautiful install. and a nice engine balance for the weight of the vanagon without overpowering the transmission. _________________

Tom, how would that work, you route air intake to the front of the van and back? Or you have 2 tanks? I must be missing something. Dave |
The IC is in the same engine comp location and Water lines run to a radiator in the front of the van. i like the idea and if the currrent set up doesnt work ill do an AWIC. Thanks for the pricing! not as bad as i thought price wise! _________________ Transaxles Rebuilt, Repaired and Re Geared 25 years. www.MRGASRebuilds.com |

Beetsport said:Your ECU will not set a trouble code for overheated Intake temps. On the AWP engine ECU the computer system will just limit boost pressures and ignition timing to save the engine.
The rear of the Vanagon has a void of air flow. I would recommend an Water over Air cooler system instead if you determine your intake temps are getting up there. You can see where we install our coolers. We are limited to CA smog laws and have to run the original cooler...
Also recommend a Scan Gauge II to connect to your data port for temps while driving. Handy device to check sensors while driving that you can leave in your Vanagon with an OBDII system.[/quote]
MR GAS said: Ill look into the Scan Gauge II if i cant find my Vagcom cable. i never have to use it and it goes a long time between . I forget where i put it.
I hope this IC works out.
Void I am hoping means Vacuum over the positive scooped air in the engine comp. Ill keep samba informed.
How much $$ does a water to air set up cost?

I see your I-Cooler is located where your license plate was. How are you keeping it cooled down & what are your intake temps?
Nice job keeping it all tucked away |
I have plans for testing the efficiency of the intercooler.
But right now the high temps out side are in the 60's F.
I havent been able to find my Vagcom cable to see IAT's
Beetsport or anyone maybe you would know if the comp will send a OBD code if it gets too hot??
This cooler is 3.5 x larger than the Passat one. The opening under the lic. plate is the same size as a passat IC. the new IC is sealed front to back w/ foam rubber. i added lower tin under the engine to promote a +positive air press in the engine comp.from the scoops.( and to keep turbo temps out) and am hoping the -vacuum at the rear of my breadbox will do the rest.
I have a GOPRO and some yarn that im going to attach to the rear of the Vanagon to see if i really get any air flow. im hoping so ! but wont know till i do it . the motor runs really cool and the IC is only warm to the touch.
#1 is that this is a project still under construction.
Thx Greg |

Here are pics of the clearance in my lower 84 2wd westy. Transaxle in factory stock location!
Oil pan is higher than the diff area of the trans. (my lowest point) and goes up slightly towards the rear. almost as high as the mustache bar.

Here are some pics. of the rear tin mods. and the intercooler.
Does any one have pics of a VD Belly pan? i ve never seen one and prefer reverse engineering over inventing stuff.

| Nice job. I've considered the same swap in the same manner. I'd want better flow through the intercooler. A Saab 900 intercooler in the driver's side D-pillar or a liquid2air system would fit the bill. Another option would be to add the diesel belly pan and louvers on either side of the license door, but I wouldn't want the intercooler there at all and would keep the ability to check/add coolant and oil. |
