I'm still around. Glad to see Nate doing a fine job continuing where I left off. Still rolling a VW and hoping to find a rolling running driving squareback at some point. May be moving across the state soon to live with my GF, so life is good right now. My Heath stabilized for the most part and the last year or so has been fighting to get healthy again. I'm getting there. Been working hard at the local YMCA spending hours in the pool doing strength training. I am now able to at least ride my motorcycle short distance again. I picked it up after selling the Bug. It's been a fun project in itself but it's no VW. Miss the comraderie on here so I figured I'd stop lurking and say hi.so Hi guys hope everyone is doing okay.

Peace and VWs!

Dan

Howdy!
Dan, it was great to meet you and your Dad yesterday. Thanks for the info about this wonderful 65' and I am excited to continue the rebirth of this great car! Drop me a line about when and where to meet up off I-90 on your trip to Spokane. Take care and best of luck on all your adventures!

My project found a new home today with a great guy and family. He will be continuing on with the build thread from here. Thank you everyone for your support and ideas and thoughts this last year. I'm still in the VW game just continuing on with my daily driver my 2011 Golf TDI. Its no air cooled but its still has the heart of VW. Once again thanks! I will be checking in every now and then and feel free to email me if you want to know how I am doing. Its been a rough year but holding my own. Cheers!

Figured I would pop on here since it's been since early this year since the last update. I moved the car into storage and have had the bug for sale all summer. Sadly not one person has bought it. Lots of looky loos, and some crazy low ball offers but no one has appeared with cash in hand yet. Losing my staorge space at the end of the year or its going to have to be stored out in the weather.

Other then that my health has thankfully been holding strong and I have been feeling a bit better. Did some traveling over the summer, and got in a relationship with a wonderful woman. And picked up a small project I can handle and do in my small workshop. 66 Honda Trail 90 I picked up for a few hundred bucks and its a complete bike with any 1100 miles on it, its just say for so long the rings collapsed. So I'll be working on it, get the bug sold and it will fund a full restoration.

Not getting totally out of the game, just maybe for the year, going to keep hunting for what I really wanted before I found the Bug, going to try and find a Squareback in good mechanical order but maybe just need a bit of body work and a good going thru.. So getting out of the full tilt game, find a runner and have some fun...

Great looking car Fast!

I really don't want to part with it, if I had a place to store it in its current situation I would more then likely shove it aside and forget about it for a few months. We are currently borrowing a corner in a friends shop to store 2 motorcycles with a 3rd on its way, the 3rd being one I am picking up as a replacement for the Bug. and the person that owns the building where we are storing them needs her shop back because a family member is going to park their diesel pusher in it now.

That and my father and I agreed that no matter what we did the car was going to be a lot more work then we originally thought, we took it to a friend that was going to get it into primer for us and do all the major body work the car needed to the point where I could start blocking and sanding, but for the price he wanted to do that I am picking up this bike I have had my eyes on. So I can just hop on and disappear again. I traded a bike to get the bug and I really miss the the bike. I just cannot see myself any more working on the car, I am going to take a huge hit what ever I do in the pocket...

After much consideration and sadness Project65 needs a new home, I no longer have the energy needed to finish the car. Its been a fun year, but I am only fooling myself thinking I can take on and finish the car the way I want to see it. I guess sometime dreams are just that, dreams and sometimes you just have to face facts and move on and get back to simpler things, going to still be around, going to get back into building 2 wheeled things, something a bit smaller scale .. To the wonder followers of my posts and my build thank you...I wont be a stranger, I'll be around and check in on you trouble makers every now and then... Peace Love and VW's

keep pluggin away at it and you'll get it straight. We had a slightly messed up front on our 65. I eventually got the hood where I was comfortable with how it worked. It took several attempts.

Thank you everyone for the kind words on my other post, being a nice day I spent some time going thru in my head and started jotting things down on paper starting with simple stuff working to bigger stuff that I can manage over the next few months.

I also ordered a siphon feed sand blaster so I can sandblast the parts myself for the cost of an hour labor at my local shop $115, I was able to get a 90 lb capacity siphon feed sand blaster shipped to my door. And I have a friend in the wholesale side of media compounds so I can get fair pricing on sand..

Going to get the fenders stripped and roughed in a bit better and at least get them sealed in good primer, then focus on repairing or replacing the front hood, some wrinkles in it and the nose needs some work from more shotty work, and follow it with the deck lid which just needs stripping and some extra holes filled. And move on to doors etc..

Going to order my Fuse/ Relay panel from Watsons and start hacking out my wiring at least to the point of rough in, fill the speaker holes in the trunk floor and start figuring out how to deal with the typical under the window rust on the back.

So hopefully that will keep me going for a month or 3, taking my time, if the body starts giving me problems, the house is 20 yards away. Picked up a few Balsa wood Plane models to do to help occupy the mind during down time, too bad they don't make a Bug one...LOL

So once again thank you to all the Sambians that keep checking on my progress, stay tuned for updates.

Also seeing this as well as Pete's 63 gave me a boost of steam.. Clean and simple...

Boredom got the best of us and found some new ways to strip paint to keep the dust down, and boy are we finding tons of spot putty, glazing compound and bondo. We are surprised that most of this has held on for as long as it did, we hardly hit it with the stripper pad and it falls off in chunks.. But I guess any Progress is Progress..lol We also switched to .023 wire in the new wire feed, what a difference that has made.

I spent a few hours and got the new decklid fitting 100 percent better then my OG hood. Damn that spring hurts when it smacks ya in the knuckles, of course after I saw the vid on the one bolt in and twist method.

Rear fenders Fitting tons better, they are next for stripping and repairs

Had to really work the passenger feder the PO used a chain to pull the fender into close place, but the rolled edge was 1" below the apron, we bolted the fenders together and built a spreader bar out of threaded rod for the back so we could work on them on the body table without them falling off and to make sure lines lined up right. My Dad says hes no body work guy, but he sure has done a great job so far. Also plugged the holes where the factory turn signals were for the smooth fender look.

Little by little getting a few things done to it, hopefully when it warms up a bit out side I can roll it outside and finish stripping the interior, finish the rough body work, and get the body up to my buddies for storage so I can focus on the Pan..

Due to Weather and lack of space currently, not much will be done for a few months, I have ordered my wiring harness from Watsons and plan on sorting it out and get the front and rear aprons at least sealed to prevent rust. Body work was making far too much of a mess in my tiny shop, going to have to wait till spring so I can work on it outside. Sending all 4 fenders to my local body shop for him to so in his spare time/ no rush for fill in work to at least get them stripped and somewhat worked into shape, drawing out a few designs for my custom Horn Grills/ LED turn signals for the front, and anything else I can do cheaply and in the cold. Healths holding out for now, Just hoping to see a 1 color car before too long so I can yank the body and work on the pan.

Continuing on with the front apron, we just could not get rid of the oil canning out of the passenger side of the apron, so since we still had the aftermarket one from WW, we decided to make it into patch panels. We just cut the entire pass section out and cut and fitted it to the OG Apron, once again not really that close, but after some bending, tacking, grinding and a few cuss words, its mocked up. Threw the front fenders on to double check fitments, we have a lot more work to do now. I like to find which ever body shop the PO hired to fix the car years ago, they really believed in it it don't lineup beat it with a hammer till it does. Pics Tomorrow..

Messed around with getting the rear fenders mocked back up to make sure everything looks good, while my Dad kept working on the front aron trying the new shrinking hammer out and we also gave a torch quenching a quick try tonight, too cold for much else outside it was pushing 30F and in the shop with the heat full blast it was in the 50's...

AFter standing there and staring and finally getting the level out my Beam is bent about 8 degrees inward, and a bit more exploring we found a bit of spot more bondo and spot puddy on the front fender along with no Sea Blue but Green, so the drivers fender has been replaced sometime in its life, it looks like its more in the shock tower, tire wear is okay nothing funny. So time to hunt down and get a new beam...

Very cool project. I love watching all the progress of these cars getting restored. Never gets old. Just curious what your thoughts are on the WW front apron. I need to order one soon. Keep up the good work.

Oh valuable lesson learned today, we used the weld thru primer that contains zinc. Must wear a respirator when welding that stuff is nasty! We had the shop closed up with the heat on and after all that welding the smoke was pretty thick, and was making me sick to my stomach. So it looks like I have a spring project and install a vent fan in the shop.
