It is a ‘71 Westy with a 8.1:1 2275cc and stock transaxle. |
Hey thanks for the response. I remembered that you got a larger engine, just couldn’t remember what size. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

We went north and took I10 to Phoenix.
I17 north out of Phoenix to Flagstaff had 6000’ elevation gain from 1000’ to 7000’. There were some long steady climbs, there were even signs that advised turning of your AC so your car didn’t overheat. At one pull off about 1/2 way up I saw 6 cars with their hoods up. I pulled that stretch at 65, we hit 240° oil and 418° head temps at the top. The temps quickly recovered in under 10 minutes. That was the highest temps I saw the whole trip. It mostly sat at 180-210° oil and 350-375° head temps. Oil pressure was at 45 the whole trip, regardless of the oil temps. _________________ __________

Good day in the bus. I was up early, walked the dawg and got everything all packed up. We got going at 8:30, stopped for breakfast and got on the road. We crushed 430 miles and climbed 7000’ of elevation back up the Colorado Plateau.
This was our first big trip with the trailer, I really liked having it. It freed up a lot of room in the bus and the bus handled towing the weight better then hauling the weight. The bus drove better, it handled better, the ride was better, it maintained speed better, temps were lower and more consistent. Once it got hot, like on a long consistent climb, the temps also recovered faster. I’m gonna make some upgrades to the trailer before the ABC Jamboree in September.
Trip stats:
Total miles: 1896
Days: 7
Nights camped: 7
States: 4
Tanks of fuel: 11
Total MPG: 18
Best tank: 20
Worst tank: 14.5
Highest price for premium: $6.19/gal
Lowest price for premium: don’t remember
Oil consumption: 1/4 qt
Mechanicals: none
Oil temps: 180-240°
Head temps: mid 300s with a high of 418°
Artist we heard the most on SiriusXM: 2Pac
Good times had: infinite
Polaroids from the trip:

They have been nothing but nice to us. Lots of waves and hellos, but most of the time they don’t ask about the bus. _________________ __________

Today we beat feet 361 miles on 1 1/2 tanks from Oceanside RV park to Destiny RV park in Phoenix. This place is A LOT different from where we were. We cruised 65+ pretty much all day. Temps were perfect and we got 20 mpg today. Towing is the way to go. We dropped the trailer and went out to eat. We’ll be out early, as we still have another 463 miles to go before we get home. We knew it would be like this since we decided to stay an extra day. But, it was totally worth it. _________________ __________

Another super fun day. Got up and took the nature trail from the RV resort to the Buccaneer Cafe for breakfast. When we got back we packed up and headed to Oceanside Beach. We got out early in hopes to get a spot in the lot on the beach. But, unfortunately the lot was closed because there was some sort of ending happening there today. I drove around for a bit and found a second lot and got a spot right on the beach. I was stoked! We posted up there for the day. We chilled, Miles went boogie boarding and we had a nice lunch on Mission. As if that wasn’t enough, mikes and I went to the pool when we got back. Then we went down to the Harbor and had a nice Seafood dinner, it was a nice way to end our stay. Tomorrow we hit the road home, we are going to split the 820 mile trip home into 2 days. We are going to look for a RV resort in Phoenix to stay tomorrow night, one more day of warmth will be nice.
Keep on busin, MTNbus
