Yup, as far as I know there aren't any oversize door pins for the later 2 bolt hinges. You might try and find a pair of used doors, and check the slop in the hinges and use them in place of your own. I suppose you could make some new bushings that fit tight on your existing pins, but then you are looking at using round stock to make pins. Something to keep in mind is the hinge pins are hardened steel.

Thanks, Bob, did not know the pins were hardened; that makes sense. I'll try Mitchell; although he's moving from Washington to Florida, he may have some pins. Otherwise, I figure I'm stuck with finding some hardened round stock and milling my pins.
Maybe you know, would a bug hinge pin press work on my kind of hinge? Otherwise, I'm going to try and make a press so I can press my pins in from the middle of the door; that's the only way they come out so I "assume" that's the way they have to go in. |
Honestly I don't how they come apart. You might try Mike Fisher, as he's in Eugene, and might have a couple of doors you can try to salvage some parts from. I think one side of the door hinge does either bolt or is welded to the inside of the door frame (inside skin). It's been a long time since I've been inside a type 3 door. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Ok, I'm completely lost and completely frustrated.
I have a 69 Squareback. The passenger door was sagging bad and the driver's door had a little sag. Figured it would be no problem finding 1st oversized hinge pins, the reamer, and press. My hinges have only two screws. However, having checked everywhere, it seems that pins, the reamer, and a press are not to be found for a T3.
I'm to the point where I may just buy some round stock; have it milled down to be pressed into the hinge from the door and ream the hinge that bolts to the body pillar. Then put fresh spacers in and call it good. |

I recently thought I'd found NOS hinges and ordered against the parts from the parts book...only one of the four wound up being correct. I think it was an error on the part of the seller but I can't be sure.
So, I went out and pulled my spare doors and took the images above - part numbers that do not match the parts book but are physically correct.
311 831 401 A - upper left
311 831 402 A - upper right
311 831 411 A - lower left
311 831 412 A - lower right |

SWEET!
Everett found a script for me and now my directory listing works again. I have to go through and add it to all my directories now.
http://www.neil.us/type3/doors/ works again. _________________

Oh yeah. You can think GoDaddy for that. My previous host let me do directory listings. GoDaddy won't allow it. It has messed a bunch of my stuff up. I will never use GoDaddy again. Too bad I prepaid for 3 years with them. The only way I can view the directory listings is with an FTP program. |
That does suck but listing the directory contents is generally insecure.
If you want a script to list everything in the directory I can probably find one. |
If you can find a way for me to list everything, I would love it. _________________

Thank you for that.
So model/year wise, reading the above thread these would fit all notches up to end of production and squares to early 66 before they changed to two bolt hinges? |

If the VW number logic is applied:
311 831 401A is the upper left hinge
311 831 402A is the upper right hinge
311 831 412A is the lower right hinge
The parts with 0 in the middle are upper hinges, 1 being the lower hinge.
The parts with odd numbers at the end are left side parts and the even numbers are right side parts.
This is how the previous hinges are numbered-there are quite a few variants actually-but they all follow the same 'logic' if you will. |

I tried to access the link, but was denied access, so I'm none the wiser.
I have some NOS hinges I want to sell but would like to know the applications to list in the ad.
Any help would be appreciated.

It took me a while to find it. Don't know IF it'll help, but it might explain partly what's going on. |
I used to be helpful around here. What happened to me? |
Well, I had to do a Samba search to find the link, as I didn't have it saved in my favorites.
It probably didn't help that it was early morning (EST or CST) that Ataraxia asked about the hinges.
It was your link, and I mentioned you in my 1st post. |
8:30am CST is early?
I've gone through the pages and most of it makes sense. I just didn't realize that VW made conversion hinges for both door/hinge configurations.
I am aware of most of the door changes through the years because I learned a lot of it the hard way a long time ago but the hinge issue never revealed itself until yesterday. Now I wonder how I never noticed it before. |
