Mine was fairly well balanced with that chain bolted to the engine lift eyes.
In your case, I would still use the engine lift points, but you will need some type of jack to support the trans.
Just go slow and keep an eye on things as you go up.
Engine looks great BTW |

Just thought I post a few photos of what I did today. I finally installed this used 2.2 wxb I bought from Surfy Murfy about a year ago (who is a very cool dude). I used a cherry picker I got from AZ a coupe of years ago. One 4x8 sheet of plywood under the engine/trans, & two 2x4 sheets under the AZ ramps. I also had a couple of 2by2's that I used to set the engine on the legs of the crane. I rolled it under & re-grabbed the chain. A little wiggling & I got it in. The 2x2's also come in handy to leverage the engine in when mating it to the trans.
My biggest problem was the heat. In the 90's & the humidity around 80%
I'm done with bolting it up. Tomorrow I'll hook it all up & hopefully off to cape cod for a week tomorrow night.

HI!
How balanced is the engine; I am wondeing if you used both lifting kugs or how the weight was distributed? I ask because I will use the same method but my engine has the transmission attached which adds weight toward the front of the package.
Appreciated
Bill

Just wanted to say I got the engine fully installed yesterday evening, after which I departed on a 5 hr road trip to Cape Cod. It ran great. I upgraded all the ground straps & also install a Jay Brown 4 gau alt wiring upgrade. Next week I will install a Van Cafe oil pressure gauge kit.
Anyway, we are off to rent some kayaks

Did some reading on the net about this.
large old piece of carpet might be of some use if working with limited budget. Good for wheeling around floor jack?
one person suggested welding a steel plate to jack stands
or angle iron pieces to spread out the weight.
As has been said I'm sure, I always work with jack stands and jack lightly
"tensioned" or jack stands and wood block. two 4x4 chunks with plywood top
work well to build block.
I like the idea of wood planks. Double them up, drive on them for
appropriate jobs?
In spite of dirt/gravel floor and mosquitoes, I feel lucky I have a shaded work space.
at OP: stay cool, take your time. _________________ 1981 Westy DIY 15ยบ ABA

I'm working on plywood too. Level ramp for the van slightly raised has been a big help. A pair of 4x10 - 10ft would do well. Cost ~ $40 each new (?) possibly can be scrounged by some folks. Or 2X10s doubled.
This has been a great addition to my work area and was pretty easy. My boards are 2.25" x 10" doug fir (11 ft long). I've since added stops at the rears so it can't roll off the board. Someone might conclude that I'me geared up for spending too much time under the van....

I didn't get it done last night. I lost that little barrel nut that secures the throttle cable in the TB . Thank god I had an extra TB with that special cable nut & the pinch bolt still on it. I should be on the road in a few hrs for Cape Cod if all goes well. My wife & kid got there a few days ago - we rented a beach cottage.
.
One more thing, I noticed this new engine has the high oil pressure switch port capped off. Can I just hook up the low press switch & ground out the wire that goes to the high switch? |

Fancy...ha ha! Actually, those 2x4 engine lift examples are what got me to thinking I could use this thing in a similar manner, with some minor mods. All I did was cut out about 2' of the uprights and then weld the top back to the tube base. I'm thinking about using the part of the rolling base with casters that I cut off the tube structure as a cradle to roll the engine up under the van. Re-purposing is fun for the whole family _________________ Casey--

don't know what happened to my post last night ( I was kidding by referring to
Caseys gantry as "fancy". Its obviously quite nice),
but some lengths of wood and a hand winch works well too.

Interesting........ It's clearly fuel injected.

Can I leave the fuel pump block (pushrod guide) in place & just put the wbx cover on it? It's sealed on pretty good |

I just made this little gantry stanchion today, from an old DVD rack I got for free from the local Habitat for Humanity store. I'm getting ready to install my ALH in the driveway (sloped concrete).

That's what I originally wanted to build, but went with an engine crane instead as I'm pressed for time right now. My DW is also slopped too. Enough that a pair of jackstands will tilt over.
^^^^^^^
Doug/Dave, good catch. It was a dual carb engine. Here's a photo of the actual engine when it had a pair of Weber's on the aircooled.net site. I can't find the build thread though from Surfy.

I just wanted to warn some folks out there. I should also mention that the plywood I got for my ramps is too thin. They are conforming to the ground & not flat on the top. Because of this, one of my ramps is swelling on the side. Not bad, but enough for me to notice it.
If you need to do this, get 3/4" plywood min.
Time to finish my coffee & get this project done...
