Italjohn, I recall you posting about installing LED bulbs in your E-code headlights but I can’t find it.

Remind me please, or link to the post?

Embarassed

Thanks for that, I’m considering a battery upgrade and this is a super trim install!

Ok thanks. So would this unit provide:battery monitor and a single shunt will provide voltage, amperage, and net battery amp-hours in or out , and that's all the info you need to competently manage a battery?

So from what I understand charging battery I would look at monitor and it would tell me when I got to 100 ah. Then turn off charger. Then as power is used monitor would reach 100 ah again the I would know time to plug charger back in.

The words you're looking for are "Amp-hours" (Ah) and "net". Amps is the present amount of current flowing, amp-hours is that rate projected over time.

Multiply amps times volts and you have power, in watts. Multiply amp-hours times volts and you have energy, in watt-hours. Both are convertible to joules which is used in much of the world, a joule is one watt-second.

A single shunt will only allow measurement of the net charge or discharge amps, not amp-hours. So if there is 10A of incoming charge while there is a 2A load in use, the net charge would be the difference, 8A. Of course the 2A powering the load isn't coming from the battery at all, it's going directly to the load from the charging source and the remainder is charging the battery.

If you have an amp-hour meter it can use a shunt and its internal clock to calculate amp-hours. Most have an programmable efficiency factor as well to compensate for the fact that it takes more than one amp-hour charge to replenish an amp-hour of discharge, usually about 95% on a newish battery and slowly (hopefully slowly) decreasing to about 85% as the battery ages.

If you want to measure net battery charge/discharge and want to separately see load amps, a second shunt is needed. Some battery monitors allow monitoring of more than one shunt. But that would be total and unnecessary geekdom, a battery monitor and a single shunt will provide voltage, amperage, and net battery amp-hours in or out , and that's all the info you need to competently manage a battery.

I'm pretty sure that a shunt - I don't think it will tell individual input/output - but I think it will show you the "combined" number.

For example if you are charging at 10 amps and using 5 amps - it would show 5 amp charging. Or vice versa - you're charging at 5 amps and using 10 amps, it would show -5amps discharging.

Thanks what I'm wondering if it reads total in total out. So let say battery empty then I would like to say total amps in lets say 100. Then I would like reader to tell me amps out So at about 90 I would know time to charge again.

Does it record amp in and out? So if you are charging amps in, than discharging amp out so you can see difference?

Thanks

No it didn't fit, so I had to remove the cover.
I'm using a rubber mat for now.
