Jimbo suggested trying silver solder as it might polish up, so I think I will try to fill the seams after wedging it down like you did. Mine's stainless though so it may be sturdier in the presence of heat. I don't think I'd try heating aluminum. Yours turned out nice. Keep on keepin' on. _________________ Big Time 1988 Vanagon Westy

Another afternoon in the Garage. I was able to get the pin holes filled and ground down. I did remember to move the puddle a little bit. Thanks JIMBO. It was a little difficult with the thin metal. But, less grinding is always a plus.
It looked pretty good. I went on to make the mounting bracket. I guess I could've just bought one. The ones I looked at, had only two mounting bolts and looked rather flimsy. I cut some strips of 16ga. and made a mental plan.
I welded that together and put it on the Plate Frame to mark the mounting holes.
I drilled out the Wire Feed hole in the indented circle (I don't know what that was for?). The Grommet I used was the ones I ordered for the Windshield Wiper arms, that were too small.
It seems I never learn. Maybe too old?
After nearing the end of this, Only then do I think, "Maybe I should test this thing?" Even if it works, will I like it?
I mean for Goodness sake, I didn't even read the specifics. Come to find out, there is a function for Running light in conjunction with the Brake light. First pic is the Running light, the second is the Brake activated.
I liked it !! So, I primered it all up.
Finished pics. Seeya, Next Time!

Hi BUGGEEE. Another Project!! You are an unstoppable force.
I just cut a little wedge out of the sides, about 1/8". Then put some blue tape on the teeth of my standard pliers(in hopes of not marking the Trim up too much). Bent down the end and folded the side Tabs in. It's not as nice as the Blurry pictures make it seem. But, that was the extent of my skill set.
I'm sure you will make it a lot nicer. |

Excellent work my bruddah! BTW your welds are looking way better! You turned up the heat. I can see it! Now you need to move the puddle around during the pull. I like using a back and forth movement, very quickly done, no holding still it helps with the amount of material that builds up, which means LESS GRINDING!
Hang loose! |
Thanks Bruddah JIMBO,
I am getting better. After 10+ years, it appears I'll never be good at it. My learning curve is just too flat! But, I'll try to remember to use that technique. I so despise GINDING. Baby Steps, indeed |

Nice!!! Love that plate with the brake light. I have been toying with getting a row of red LED in the louvre vents. I was thinking anything to help people know I intend to STOP! That plate might work!
I am a life long subscriber to the “baby steps” process of working. It has always amazed me at how far one can go simply being in touch with a project everyday! I include researching, ordering and planning as part of the process.

Hi All,
I FINALLY got an afternoon in the garage! Not a lot of time, but I'll take it.
Awhile back I was looking at some of plastikman187"s photos of his smoothed out Bug. His Engine Deck Lid was nice and clean, I... LIKED IT!
The only thing is Hawaii's Traffic Code is kinda specific about the location and illumination of the rear plate. I went looking for a solution on the Web. I found something pretty cool. It has a LED License plate light, AND a LED third Brake light! I was thinking about how to mount a third light, this should take care of that. On less thing.
So, all that was needed was to smooth out the License Plate light Hood mounting area. There is an indented square under the plate and then an indented lip for the Light Hood. I thought that I would weld the patch in the indentions to help with any warpage and further finaggling later.
I used the last piece of scrap for the Donor Trunk Lid. It has a nice curvature already. so that helped.
After tacking it in, I flipped it over and cut out the old piece.
I cleaned it up a bit and put in more welds. I was not there yet, but it was time for some Adult Beverages!! I think I can get a little more time next weekend.

Hi there. I haven't had any time to work in the garage this past month. But JEFFSTHING, that I had mentioned earlier has sent me several pics of his "79 Super with his mirrors installed. Not, the same mirrors that I got, but
Very COOL !! He also mentioned that he will selling it soon.
Enjoy

Thanks for the info, vwuberalles. I've seen good and bad experiences with these type of mirrors. I'm thinking it probably has a lot to do with how good your eyesight is functioning. Hopefully, mine will still be good enough to see that far.
I didn't really have a lot of time. But, I had to close those extra holes after the mirrors. My mind kept drifting to doing something with them, like those Marker lights. Then, I was thinking maybe T-Handle Hood Latches. Silly stuff like that.
I thought, just bang them out and get myself over it!!

Love the mirrors! I actually put fender mirrors on my Z31, they work surprisingly well and eliminate blind spots! Getting them adjusted right is kind of annoying but once they're set they're fantastic. You get used to them pretty quickly. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12. Thanks for all you do on the site. TheSamba is invaluable!!
And Don't feel bad about missing this folly. I'm in Hawaii and Post on random days, usually between the hours of 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. By the time "Normal" people are up and about, it's usually buried under real threads.
Keep up the Good work, my Good Fellow!! |

Howzit EPI !!
Good to hear from you. Yah, I like them wide Mouldings too. I always thought it was weird that they made the Supers a lot wider and Fatter up front, but went and put on skinny spaghetti Mouldings.
Oh, and love those old "Z's". They are crazy expensive now, if you can even find one nowadays. Even straight from Japan! Although, I doubt those Mirrors were any help on that car either. JeffsThing mentioned on a post about the Mirrors that he has a '79 Super with Suicide doors AND the Mirrors. He's not with the car right now, but he said he would be glad to send some pics in April. That would be cool to see! Meanwhile, I'll just keep stumbling along. |

Wow, DUNGBTL!!
I couldn't even imagine a build like yours in my wildest dreams. Thank goodness you take a lot pictures or I'd be totally lost following along. Looking at threads like yours and other Masters help to push me forward with my small problems. So, thanks for that!
I can always count on your encouragement, JIMBO. You are a real VW enthusiasts. Every inch of every car, Crazy! You're the neighbor that every guys wants next door. Well, except your actual neighbors. But, SCREW them!!

Always inspiring with the creativity out of necessity. Keep thinking out of the box and follow your “vision” for your masterpiece. Glad to see you getting time to play in the garage again. I really like the wide molding. I have always been curious with the swan neck mirrors if they were actually useful. Reminds me of the fender mounted mirrors on the early 240Z cars. |
