Here are the plates from Gary. He also included the little blue keychain tag with the VIN number on it.

I'm getting close to the point to finally get the bus registered. The chassis number for the 59 is present near the battery, but the ID plate in the engine bay and the M-Code plate are both long gone. I reached out to Gary here on the Samba to help. He suggested ordering a birth certificate so that he could replicate the two missing tags. It took about 2-3 weeks to arrive via DHL and was 99 euros ($116). I probably don't need the tags, but if the vin verification requires more than one number, at least I'm set.
Nothing special for the M-codes, just a dove blue US spec panel bus with overriders delivered to New Orleans and latter chopped up near Yuma AZ and turned into a paint shed.

Thank you for the kind words. The Frankenbus is "road worthy" but not legally quite yet. I did take it on its longest drive so far from my home in Redlands to the neighboring town of Mentone to have Ahmad from Kraften Wagens do some welding for me. He did an excellent job of installing the seat mounts in the proper locations, installing a set of nutserts for the back rest of the back seat and filling an ugly hole in my air box. I have a few more projects for him to work on in the future.
I also did my best on the passenger side rear corner body work. I'm trying to keep it looking aged and nowhere near perfect. I will say I am impressed by the power of the Subaru. The bus scoots!

Trying my best to keep doing a little work on the Frankenbus. I took on another project last year and bought an electric "Duffy" boat for $30 at an auction. I am getting close to finishing it now and hopefully can spend more time on the bus.
Here are a couple of before and after pictures of the Duffy:
On the bus, I turned my attention to the rear driver side corner that was pretty munched and had the electrical outlet hole in it from when it was a storage shed. It is no where near perfect, but better than before.

Good to meet you Johnny and nice to put a face to the person who enjoys Redlands barndoors and Bering Monroe plate frames as much as I do.

I have about 14 miles on the Frankenbus driving around on Sunset. I'll let you know when I finally get around to registering it.

Here is a little update on the Frankenbus. I was at the OCTO show yesterday looking at all of the incredible buses. Walking by the Koch booth I saw their barndoor headlight covers and decided to buy a set. The yellow glass looked good but they were bad at night. I had the bumpers powder coated along with the window frames and the VW emblem. I took my fuel door into my local paint shop and had a few rattle cans made to paint the nose and other areas on the bus. Slow progress.

Still working on the Frankenbus. I started the process of pulling out and cleaning up the window frames. The nose of the bus came from Oregon and the frames are in pretty good shape with nothing other than surface rust. The flat head screws were sure a pain to get out.
I have the seal kit and wing windows from Wolfsburg West and the stationary and sliding glass from ISP to go in. I'm thinking the best way to tackle the surface rust is to have the frames bead blasted.

Great project, it's surely going to be a nice bus. With some careful paint blending, polish work and some extra original Dove blue doors, it could easily be a patina-ed bus with largely original paint. But then it wont be recognizable as a ''Franken-bus'' any more... |

Thanks for the kind words Brandon!
I now have amassed a total of 7 miles driving around the neighborhood in the Frankenbus so I decided to start the clean up of the interior. The back 2/3 was a paint shed in Arizona and someone spilled some goopy junk that I have been working to get off. I found a few pin holes on the driver's side, but for the most part, the cargo floor is in great shape after 65 years.

Off the trailer and driven around the neighborhood for the first time. Glad to have it back to tinker on.

The metal order from Grumpy’s made it to Idaho and the work continues. Sean worked his magic to get the doors lined up better. He also has the 67 lotus white bus in my avatar under the knife. I’m hoping to pick the frankenbus up in late July.

as he sais you must "cut" that part, i thinked to use a "middle" non sunroof Part, cut it in parts and use it behind the sunroof opening, it got failed because the bending of the roof is different on that location, so i used parts of the Original Sunroof part and the middle non sunrrof part, you can see it on my Thread.
good luck!

Hey Christian,
Yes I closely follow your "67 Sparsamba" thread. Great work over there in Austria!
The Grumpy's part has this description: "1949-1967 Bus inner roof stiffener. Inner roof stiffener supports the roof skin both on sunroof and standard roofs. Made from of original thickness metal with correct contour but must be trimmed for either front, center, or rear location."
I believe this video shows them briefly installing it at approximately the 3:20 point.

I have been looking for the OG metal part for for several years without any luck until I found it listed on Grumpy's site. Hopefully it does the trick to help two buses. |
