Late to the story but glad you made it out of fort myers, I ran from there 30 years ago! Bonita/ Estero used to be my stomping grounds, in HS my first beer served by Chip at BuffaloChips. He was also my little league sponsor and neighbor-small world. The towns have changed in 25 years and I now get lost when I go back to visit. September in the keys is where it is at, lived at the old fishermans lodge on Big Pine for a few months and had 3rd gear lock out in my jetta while camping bahia honda, good times!
No insight on your issue |

Looking forward to it.
Did you ever install the CHT gauge?
The Samba sure can be a source of great advice:

It was death by a thousand cuts. The last of which was the exhaust seat giving out. And the root cause was me driving it like I stole it on an 1,800 mile trip during the hottest July on record. In Florida. Don't tell Dave.
I'll be doing a post mortem, but not until the fresh engine is in. Plan to attempt to rebuild the old one. An heir and a spare. Tempted to increase compression and substitute modern ignition and fuel injection. No reason not to double the horsepower. But that's a story yet to happen.
To be continued

Not that it matters. Zero is zero, but I'm sensitive to inaccurate gauges after the fuel pressure... And misfiring puns. |
Well, the mystery in the unfolding events/stories, is that the engine would not idle down without dying out.
My engine as I explained above, had a hint of a misfire (road trip to Alaska, 1997). At Tok Alaska, after a fill-up and a pressure wash to knock off a ton of mud, I was letting the engine idle when I noticed a slightly weak misfire (if that makes sense). Well, about 30 or 40 miles on heading toward Fairbanks all of a sudden there was a solid misfire. We pulled over thinking maybe a plug wire had come loose. The engine would idle but obviously with a shake.
It is a long story that happened on a Friday evening and we were back on the road Monday morning. (A DIY by use of a guy's garage and a junk yard down the road with parts.)
So, I am thinking there may be other issues besides a burnt valve, moved valve seat or loose valve seat which will likely be on an Exhaust Valve.

Sounds like you have a great new engine with all the right fixinβs. Stab that new engine in there and enjoy some new road trips with friends and family. Meeting new friends along the way and sharing is what itβs all about. YMMV

Test the gauge on a known vehicle w/o issues
That will tell u whether its readings are accurate
Good Luck/Report back

I read your link and agree, exhaust valve issues.
I wish I'd done a simple compression test before diving down the fuel delivery rabbit hole. But the way this occurred had me thinking bad gas. A dubious fuel pressure gauge backed this up.
But along the way I learned lots. And you were there to back me up. Thanks. _________________ 82 AC vanagon approx 200K miles (3K are mine).

Did you read my last post? The link I included in that post? Just put the new engine in. Ugh.

A 5 cylinder Volvo will drive from Canada to nyc on four cylinders at 25 mpg and 65 mph with barely any vibration, then give another 3 months of service until you get to the valve job
Itβs amazing how well a dead cylinder engine will rev in the 2500-3500 band

Well, it appears my prediction was wrong.
Again, I forgot about the engine being the 2.0 Air-cool.
I lost a cylinder to a burnt valve many years ago on my 83 2.0 Air-cool. At idle before total loss of compression, a slight misfire could be heard. But, when it lost total compression there was a solid misfire at speed on the road or at idle. The valve looked as if a torch had been used to cut a small ditch on one side. However, it would start just fine and idle really rough due to the misfire.
Also, the 2.0 Air-cool with high miles is subject to have Valve Seat movement which can cause loss of compression as well as a burnt valve.
Glad you nailed it...
Oh, what was the compression on the other two cylinders? _________________ '84 Vanagon Tin-top, ALH TDI, two trips to Alaska, 2014 & 16. 1989 Tin-top unmolested.
