| ^^ Thanks had not thought of that! I am old enough to recognize those OMC tanks and the two stroke motors they were designed for. Great idea for repurposing something that otherwise would probably be mothballed. |

| ^^ Gret pics and epic trip!!I see you are repurposing old outboard motor gas tanks as Jerry cans on your roofrack. I had a similar idea but struggled with how to get the gas from the outboard motor tanks in to the bus without spilling and making a mess. Curious how you seemingly solved that. |

Trip film came back! What a journey.
We were aiming to leave early march. But some rod issues with Jesses bus and other mechanical things we ended up leaving early April from Oregon.
Within the first 70 miles we had our first break down. Jesse axle seal decided to leak.
After an hour chilling by a napa we were back on the road. First stop was the Oregon coast. Then Olympic Peninsula.
After some fun on the coast we hit the ferry over and started climbing into Canada. The first part in BC was absolutely stunning. Winding corners with endless MTN vistas.
We kept continue camping in some beautiful areas. Saw some bears and other cool wild life. We eventually made it to the Yukon and the Casiar. Most beautiful and fun section of the drive.
After days and days and countless miles we finally made it to the Yukon, Alaskan border. Wahooo!! But we still had many more miles to go.
The drive down from Alaskan border to Girdwood was absolutely stunning. Endless MTN view and vista camp sites. What a trip!
This a brief brief summary of the trip. Look for more about the trip in the fall. Can honestly say it was the coolest road trip of my life. Strongly encorage any one to take the trip! _________________ -1953 Porsche Ivory American Coupe

Krustrepair, super happy you made it home. Looking forward to more images from film. We should all keep a bungee in our spare parts toolbox for roadtrips now.

I am happily writing this from home. The bungee took me 3500 miles no issues. Thanks for all the help and responses. Excited to share the film photos once they are developed.
In total it was about 7k miles round trip. I calculated the hours... damn we spent some time hunched over. Lets say my but needs some rehab time.
All in all most beautiful drive of my life. Excited for more adventures.
Planning on driving the bus down to OCTO with the photos printed from the trip. See yall in so cal!

Great to hear you made it back- hopefully not too stressful wondering if trans was going to implode. As others have said now would be a good time to look into what is going on before it gets too much worse.
Great pics, epic trip. Did you do a lot of miles on gravel roads and if so did your windshields and headlights survive?
Any pro tips you can offer up having completed this journey? |

Congrats on getting her home!
As a former brother of the order of Bungee I had complete and absolute faith she'd get you home! Makes the trip even more special for when you reminisce years down the road!
Now, get busy and fix it. Don't push your luck you know haha! _________________ Never argue with an Idiot. They'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. |

You made it back home! hooray!
fwiw, the tranny in my 61 pops out of 2nd under deceleration, since it was rebuilt in the nineties. I don't decal in 2nd that often, basically just on Shasta, but it surprises me once in a while. Not the best rebuild. lol. but other than that it works fine. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Congrats on making it all the way back on "da bungie". We had our fingers and toes crossed for you. Toughing it out saved you a bunch of transporting costs! Welcome home!

| I've driven several thousand miles with a bungee. I have also driven from NY to Alaska several times [summer and winter] including last summer in our Bus. The chances of a breakdown are real and it's a long wait for a tow not to mention having a tranny shipped. I expedited a small part from Cali to Fort Nelson for our Bus on the Alaskan Highway last June and it only took 9 days! A ferry out of Whittier or a shipping container out of Anchorage is your safest bet. Nate [Frontier Finds] can help you out with info on a shipping container out of Anchorage. Good Luck! |

My money is on you making it all the way home and then some til the time is right to fix things at your leisure in your home environment.

I like your style, keep us posted, good or bad. Hope it’s good!
I would do the same if I was younger than the 83 I am now.
Wife & I were in Alaska from WI quite a few years back in our 78 stock Westy, six weeks, 6500 miles, slept in it every night and ate only one meal in a resturant.
Trip of a lifetime. Still have the bus & camp locally quite often. |

My 66 bus did several thousand miles with a bungee on the shifter for 4th gear before I replaced the entire transmission and reduction boxes all at one time.
IF I were contemplating just removing and replacing the "center section" being the transmission, I'd have to think long and hard about tearing down the reduction boxes just to get them off the old transmission then back on to the new transmission....that's a lot of work. I'd probably throw the dice see how much shorter of a distance a car hauler would have to get it home IF it failed, there might be a lot of satisfaction IF you made it all the way.
