PostPosted: Thu Jul 27, 2006 12:02 am    Post subject: Rear window vents???? Reply with quote

Been lurking around the site for a while now and all my questions have been answered save one. What is the technical term for what appear to be air vents on the interior on either side of the rear window on my '71 Super? Also anyone know where I can get some replacements? I've searched wolfsburg, jbugs, aircooled, etc but not knowing what I'm looking for makes it hard.

All the help is appreciated. Love the forum by the way....

Aloha, Matt on Kauai

if your talking about the air vents seen on the far right of this photo...then they are part of the fresh air ventalation system on later models..which also halps explain why pop outs seemed to all but disappear on later models.

they do not feed into the engine compartment....the outside half moon vents behind the quater windows are where the air enters/exits. fresh air from the front in dash vents flows through the car to the rear vents.

technical name...i have no idea..

Yep. those are the ones. A lot of parts houses have them where you could probably find their picture. But with your '71, and looks like a '71 in Jasons picture, they had a different vent cover. It was a 1 piece big plastic cover that covered the whole area where the vinyl is missing in Jasons picture. They are not available. I doubt if you would ever find a used one that wasn't deteriated and broken up. '72 started with the 3 small oblong separate trim pieces like you found. And they do fit into the body holes in a '71. You'll be 2 short. Notice the 4 holes in the pic. Plug it or buy an extra set. And you will have to get some headliner vinyl to cover the uncovered area. The outside trim piece with chrome like in Jasons picture is a 1 or 2 year only. Other years were just black plastic. If you have a good set with chrome hold on to them. Or else send them to me. Laughing

Desertbusman- I know a yard here in Houston that has several of these chrome trim half-moon vents. They may not be in perfect shape, but if you want a pair, send me a PM

Please explain what happens to the air entering the crescent vents from outside the car. Does the air come through the interior vents or through to the engine? I understand the air exiting the 8 vent holes inside the car come from the hood fresh air box but don't understand the exterior crescent moon vents. Thank you

Air exiting the vent holes on either side of the rear window flows OUT of the crescent vents on the outside of the car behind the rear side windows.

In other words, the exterior crescent moon vents are exit holes from the cabin. They are not entrance holes.

Air enters the engine compartment through the vent in the body at the base of the rear window, and through the vents in the deck lid.

I found them at JBUGS, CIP1, both in black and white. JBUGS part # 311819467-BK, 311819467-WH. CIP1 part # VWC-311-819-467-BST (black), VWC-311-819-467-WST (white). As said in another post the one piece vents are no longer available, but if your not a purist it's you car.

Those will not fit the 4 hole 71 vents. They are for the newer 3 hole only.

I remembered I have a 71 super in my barn and sure enough I don't have the covers either.
Does anybody have a picture of what they are supposed to look like?

Thanks, that's kind of what I expected them to look like given the dirt lines left on my headliner. I think I will make my own, the SB is next on "the list".
Also, was yellow the only SB color for that year or just the favorite? Laughing

Hello!
Here's my recent experience with getting new vents for my early '71 Standard Beetle. The old original vents had been crumbling away for years from sun and age, and last year a leak in my rear window seal exacerbated the general damage in the rear with water. Ugh. It was a mess!

Seal replacement snowballed into all new window seals, windshield, headliner, vents, and rear carpet repair. After checking out all the threads and leads on The Samba about the vents, I ordered a pair from Peter Horvath. He and Andreas Becüwe seem to be the only two sources making these vents these days. (I've included all their order details at the bottom.)

I emailed Peter with my order and PayPal payment, and received the new pair promptly. Peter is super straightforward, and the vents are as substantial as any interior replacement parts out there or better. I finally got them installed recently, along with all the new headliner, seals, etc., and the vents look beautiful!

Here's the "before," with what remained of my passenger-side vent:

Here's ordering info for Peter, as of March 2022:
Custom-made in Hungary by Petr Horvath
Email him at [email protected] with your full name and delivery address.
Takes 7-10 working days plus shipping time from Europe.
Payment is via PayPal - address: [email protected]
One pair vent covers: EUR 100€
Shipping cost to U.S: EUR 15€

Here's the info for Andreas Becüwe in Germany, whom I contacted and who sounds equally straightforward to order from. His vents are also custom-made of UV-resistant plastic.
[email protected]
Cost:120€ for the pair, plus post to the U.S. of 27,50€
Takes a similar amount of time, 2 weeks plus shipping time.
Payment via transfer to his bank IBAN:DE10360700240307541300

Very Happy

They are what we call "inobtainium" which means no one sells them commercially.
Having said that, you CAN purchase them from private individuals who make them, but they change over $100 for 2 vents. A little too steep for me....

I did see one guy who made them out of a thin metal, and they were awesome.

I had the same issue and elected to try to save mine.

Here's my attempt at preserving the ones I had.
