Question I was going thru an old box I recieved with my 1974 bus and found a mixture of Type 1 and Type 4 parts. I have a lot of new roller bearings by Timken and was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a cross reference for them?

Or possible someone can ID them for me? The two roller bearings are numbered L45449 and LM11749. The races are L45410 and LM11710 respectively. If anyone knows that they are for the front wheel of a 1974 bus could they let me know? I'm about to set out on a cross continent journey and would like to know if they should come along for the ride....(You never know where and when the law of entropy will grip you...) Many thanks, Chris

None of those part numbers match anything in the Timken online catalog except LM11710 and there's no info on it.

I'd contact them and see if they can cross reference those old numbers. Here are the bus wheel bearing part numbers:

211405625 front
211501283D outer rear
211501287 inner rear

Well it just so happens I spent all day yesterday and today redoing the front wheel bearings on my 78 Westy. The inners on both sides were good (Timken). But as for the outer bearings, one was trashed, the other okay, so I replaced them both and kept the good used one as a spare.

My fronts were Timken - the bearing is LM 11949 (Made in France), and the race is Timken LM 11910 and is Made in USA.

I ordered replacements through my local FLAPS (211 405 645D) and the brand I got is KOYO - made in Japan. The cross reference on the box says LM 11949/10. They look and feel identical in every way. The local machine shop guys who pressed out my old races said that KOYO were a good, high quality bearing maker.

As far as I know, 72-79 front bearings are all the same - in fact I think it extends up until 84 Vanagon's as well (but I may be wrong here).

I believe you're right. At least, my '81 VAnagon used the same bearings.

On that note, see this cautionary tale about some industry standard LM11949 bearings that turned out to be not so standard. Mad

I know that the L45449 cone bearing is used in watercooled 020 5-speed gearboxes as the pinionshaft end bearing and the race for it is pressed in the case half.
