So why would you spray clearcoat over flat black? Isnt that defeating the purpose? If youve got just some parts, try Duplicolor Engine Enamel, semi-gloss black. It is real durable, doesnt chip or scratch, and you dont need all kinds of primer under it. FWIW.

I want the clear coat to keep it from fading in the sun and to protect in from chemicals that might get on them. Besides, I may just paint the whole car and the smaller parts will be a good test.

are we talking rattle cans?? if so try a satin clear, found at like Autozone, they even have it in the high heat engine paint.
if you are talking real paint job, then flattening agents can be added to the clear.
powder coating is probably your best bet, but is costly of course

Add flatting agent to the black AND the clear....
The more you add to the clear the duller the black appears.

Hope this helps..

These are single stage ( no clear applied over ) paints. The "clear" is already added in you can say.

Try using an aresol can of Matt Finish. I use it on alot of flat black parts and it provides a clear flat finish tht will not "gloss up" your flat black paint. I purchase it at local hobby and craft stores

(--the 2X covers great--AND they have Primer thats 2X coverage also--)

I have used it on a set of old ford Tractor headlights
and will probably put it on The Bare Metal of my car

Rattle can clearcoat on bare metal??? I say NO... That's going to rust soon no matter how dry your climate.

I've sprayed a lot of different matte and flattening additives mixed in many different types of automotive grade paints. Nearly every paint company has their own version. Single stage, clearcoats, enamels, urethanes- it's all farely simple. Check with your local paint supplier, they have most of the answers.
