Before I put these side covers on again, could someone please confirm whether I need gaskets, o-rings or both. I think I know the answer based on posts here, but, would appreciate confirmation.

I have a '63 with side covers stamped 113.301.183 B and 113.301.184 B.

There's no groove in the side cover for an o-ring and only a slight bevel on the case. Dry fitting caused the o-ring to squeeze out around the bolts (clearly the bevel isn't big enough for it). There's nothing in the design that looks like it's meant for an o-ring, but they came with the gasket kit and that threw me for a loop. Samba posts indicate that there was a change between B and C side covers with B using only the paper gaskets and C using only the o-rings. Is that correct? So I only need the paper gasket for my Bs?

While I'm at it, should I use or avoid gasket seal (e.g., Permatex) on this and/or other areas of my '63?

Thanks. I'll put a sign in the garage... Read Samba first, then install parts!

Finger painting RTV onto the gaskets just as you finally install them.
Just make sure you have fitted the gaskets for how many you will need for each axle first. Not too tight or too loose at that pivot joint or you will have trouble.

He's not talking about the axle tubes, he said Side covers.

The early side covers you have (B not C) use only the paper gasket. You'll use only ONE per side cover. Coat both sides with your favourite gasket sealer.

Personal preference is Permatex "Right Stuff". Had a rebuilt tranny that had a case that never should have been used due to corrosion at the flange - was puking fluid like no tomorrow. Coated both sides of the gaskets with Right Stuff and is been bone dry for close to 2 years.....
