| We are going on a long trip (4500-5000 miles in 2 weeks Period ) with the 74 thing this summer. My plan was to rebuild this engine to stock everything. Stock 85.5 pistons, Stock crank, stock valve and heads, stock cam and stock distributor. One question would be the compression ratio. I was thinking of upping the compression from the stock 7.3 to maybe 8.0. what is your thoughts about that? Also I have seen a lot of talk about EMPI parts. I had purchased EMPI head bolts and gland nut. Is that a wise chose or should I get something different? Last one (for today) oil filter and oil cooler. Will the oil filter that come directly off the oil pump work with a stock Thing exhaust or should I just stay with the stock screen or would a remote filter and oil cooler be better? I don’t want any trouble on the trip my wife would knock me in the head. The stock engine seemed to work for many years the way they were designed and just thought I would ask for others opinion. |

For a stock cam, I would leave the CR alone. Instead of the filter pump, I would recommend this:http://www.cbperformance.com/mobile/Product.aspx?ProductCode=1738 _________________ 74 Baja 1600 Dual ICT |

CB Performance reconmends 8:1 with stock 1600 engines (due to the 10% ethonol in gas today)
Also, Ive built my stock 1600 with 8:1 (STOCK CAM) and it works great!
My new engine build, I'm going with a VW of Mexico Filter pump. it has 30mm gears, so you will need to run a lighter oil (like 0w-20) Also it can only be used with a Dished Cam.
Bocar Makes them.
As for the fitment with a Thing exhaust. I'm unsure. My stock muffler has the pre-heat tube on the right side, so it fits just fine.
Pump also takes a MANN W719/5 oil filter.
I've played around with full flow filter lines, its great for huge race engines, but filter pumps work good for stock engines, with stock oil flow.
I would not use a filter on the suction side of the pump,(in the sump) that leads to problems.

I went with Moresa Piston & Cylinders, they were the OEM manufacturer to VW of Mexico.
