Lovely! Do you know any of its original history, of how it came to California? Looks like it is totally original and complete.

This should be a good one to watch. Looks fairly clean and unmolested. Cool

Would a regular ol' post suffice?

A couple years ago, ErikG hit me up with a peculiar message. It was something like, "Hey. You live in Santa Clara, right?" I knew right away that it was car related. He told me about an early Squareback that had popped up at a consignment dealership right near my house, but also noted that the listing had gone dark. It had only been up for a few hours. We found some pictures and my interest was peaked. He asked me to scope it out so I called the dealership but they were closed. I drove by and peaked through the fence, but there was no early Squareback. I emailed the dealership at 10:30PM and got an answer at 11:30PM...

"Car is sold, sorry."

Bummer. And it was cheap too. Double bummer. Long story short, it popped up a few weeks ago for sale. I still had that itch so I went to check it out. Here are those pictures:

The Good:

It's a very dry car. It does not have the typical rust that most do.

It's pretty straight. There are some issues, but nothing super major.

The patina matches. A lot of times, "patina" cars have that one random fender, or the rear decklid doesn't quite match. I can't do that kind of patina.

It runs. It stops.

The Bad:

It looks like it was curbed at some point.

The under dash, inner fender wells, lower doors, etc. are sprayed black. I think it's spray on POR15 as the pan has the same coating. There's tons of overspray where I wish there wasn't.

It has some "character."

The engine is a later case and missing most of the early bits besides the single carb setup. It seems like they did what they could to keep it on the road. I can appreciate that. It was switched over to 12V, which I'm not mad at. It has disc brakes, which is something I would have done myself as I'm all for safety upgrades. I saw what I wanted to see and went home.

A couple weeks later, based on all of the info above and some other details, I made an offer hoping it would be refused and I'd get to stop day dreaming about this thing. Needless to say, I ended up with an early Squareback. Shocked

Really nice survivor! My two cents:
Hide the overspray with careful matching paint.
Leave the external blemishes; yes, they add character!

Don't you hate it when that happens? Laughing I don't know why I do that either. I ended up with a 2 car garage full of parts that I didn't need one time, and 3/4's of a 2 car garage full of parts the 2nd time I did that. That 2nd time all I really wanted was an engine, but ended up with 3 pickup trucks full of parts. It was a body shop guy cleaning out the building as he sold the building. Crazy how things work out sometimes. Rolling Eyes

Not sure which kit they went with. Haven't dug into that yet. Also not sure of the who question. I have the brakes from the Notchback if I ever wanted to go back to stock-stock.

The AC Industries kit on the Notchback required some mods to the caliper to fit the early wheel. Curious to dig into this and see what they did. If I have to go the AC route again, I will do that.

Two weeks ago we picked it up and it was wearing this roof rack. I'm not a rack guy, so it's going to a buddy.

Hopefully clean underneath... to prevent recurrence, not to hide rust.
