I just bought a 1966 square back VIN 366020*** and I'm trying to decode its birthday but the numbering system on the VIN page does not make sense to me.
Also it looks like the model page has some serious errors in the year column Mine is a LHD 1966 Variant which does not match anything I see there.
Help?

Yours is a very early 66 built in August 1965 according to the chart. Your model is a 36 (Variant) instead of Model 31 (Sedan/ Fastback) as listed in the VIN chart, the second 6 is model year 1966, and the chart shows that the LAST VIN produced in that month is 027119.
Hope this helps _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Does anyone have the assembly instructions for a 1966 type 3 squareback? I have never assembled one of these kits before and the instructions are MIA
Is this the right number of torsion bars? Inquiring minds want to know!

As for instructions on reassembling one, look thru the links in my signature, or my gallery. I don't have any Squareback pics, but the Notch and the T-34 should give you enough info to help you out. Any other questions you can post up and the forum can help too. I never took any pics of my 70 Square when I had it apart, and my 69 Square never got taken apart other than putting the engine back in it (the PO pulled it to rebuild it).
As for the torsion bars, look to see if the 2 larger bars have a letter stamped in them or if they are marked in any way. Yes the bars with splines on each end are for the lower trailing arms, while the other bar is a sway bar that connects the 2 upper trailing arms together. The one with a threaded end is for the right side and is the one that is used to adjust the slack in the arms. Do you have the Brown Bentley manual? If not get one, as it'll help immensely, and we can direct you to the page with the info you need. It also has the torque specs you need for the various parts you bolt together. It's almost a must have for these cars, as they're NOT the same as a bug or bus.
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Start with the suspension & get the chassis rolling.
I hope you got the nuts & bolts in marked plastic bags?
Even if they are All in a bucket, you can still sort them out!
The rear hatch door springs are kind of tricky.

Hey thanks guys. I will be relying on all of you for help on this one. I have assembled many beetles
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=726892&highlight=
And can probably do it with my eyes closed but this is my first T3 project. I had a '71 notch 30,000 years ago but it didn't really need any work other than cosmetic. In the early '90s I could go to an auto wrecker and there would be a row of T3s to take bits off of. I found the turn signal lens, emblems and the hooks for the seat belts and all the other bits that had wandered off in one trip to the junk yard. Those days are OVER!
The fellow who dismantled the car had no idea what he was doing and just threw everything in boxes. Anyways I'm really looking forward to this.
BTW
I'm hoping I can reuse this plate. I'm also hoping I can scrub off all the primer he shot all over the car.

So today we loaded up the truck (trailer actually) and moved the body to my place.
Where the chassis was already waiting
Things are a bit of a mess right now but I will sort things out and start planning my attack

Great looking project. I will second the get it rolling part. Pedals, wiring, gas, brake lines shifter bushing are so much easier before the body gets bolted down. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

I get where you guys are coming from but there is a lot of rust repair to do and the body is going to have to come off and on the pan many times before it is done and it is going to be much easier to lift the body off the pan and move the pan aside to get access for welding if the pan is as light as possible.
However! I certainly did it the way you suggest when I did the '54 beetle so the decision will be made soon. The issue I have with assembling the pan is that the rear transmission mount and suspension has only one mounting point on the pan making it very difficult to deal with unless it is bolted to the body.
As I say... I really appreciate any and all advice and am counting on you guys to help me out on what I'm hoping is going to be a real fun project.

Garage straightened up somewhat. TR6 covered and stuffed in a corner.
Engine:
Transmission
Beautifully straight, rust free nose:
Beautifully straight, rust free doors
A bit of ugliness here on both sides
The car came with a set of solid heater channels
I suspect they are for an earlier car tho, the lower door hinge mounts are slightly different
Tomorrow I will bolt the pan to the body and decide where to start.
Probably with this bit of nastiness

Bolted the pan to the body today so I can start rust repair
Now what the hell is this?

It allows the front seat on that side to fold forward when the door is open (cable operated). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Oh wow, you got a special 66. Nerd fun fact - the 3 bolt doors are a carry over from the year prior. Due Im sure to where you live and the fact that its in the first 1000 made for 66.
Very cool. _________________

Oh ho... Not a feature I was aware of. Of course they are both seized solid so that is going to take some effort to make work. Very cool.

Here is the only other 66 I've seen in the wild with 3 bolt doors. It too was Canadian. Pics seen here at the Vintage Show at Shoreline Community College in the Seattle area.

Semi-gloss BLACK. Reason is so that you did not see any wheel color through the brake cooling slots in the factory-included beauty rings. Those rings were utilized on the 4-bolt rims thru the '69 model year. From '70 they were discontinued and the rims factory-painted silver.
Here's a photo of one of the rims from a '66 S'back owner's manual-
And a press photo of a '66:

Don, if you need anything I'm currently parting out a 64 notch and have parted out several type 3's over the years including a 64 and 68 squareback. Im looking to clean up my type 3 parts hoard so if you want bring a truck and trailer to Saskatoon. _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval
