Opinions and options on the shortened oil pans out there? My needs mean no off-roading. Aluminum cracks where metal bends, so metal would be easier to repair, but I feel this is a low priority. I am not sure I like the idea of a reduced capacity.

By no means a subaru expert. But the simple fact that the Van Cafe has baffles and a pick-up that seem like they were designed to work together would do it for me.

there is some good research out there why Subaru changed the design of their oil pans, windage trays and pick up tubes. I think Killer B has some videos why the changes were necessary. It boils down to even the stock pans (before they changed design) had oil starvation issues. And in my opinion, it is even a bigger issue in a vanagon constantly running at higher RPM's and angles when off roading etc.

I am really surprised we don't have better options for shortened, hi capacity oil pans.

Well, I already bought Van Cafe's engine mount, so that's out. I looked at Van Cafe's oil pan and I like the concept. And given it is designed for the EJ25 swap into a Vanagon I would expect their exhaust would not interfere. Or have one custom made locally.

No thanks!

Good info here

Seems the Van Cafe pan is the best overall design? Retains the factory capacity and they say internally baffled with shortened dip stick and pick up.

Or if I am not worried about clearance run the newer style pan.

Dry sump system!!

All kidding aside, not sure why these pans are being made with out windage and baffles?? I remember seeing a video of the new Porsche engine being run on a dyno that simulated the conditions of the Isl of Mann. The engine was rotating and twisting almost upside down to simulate the G forces.

Not the same race conditions but the sloshing in a vanagon has to be happening.

I've been running the Outfront Motorsports shortened pan and pickup for over 85,000 miles with zero issues.

I went with those guys because they build reliable 500HP+ race motors and would seem to know what they are doing! Very Happy

Same here. I asked them to modify a new oil pan for a couple of bucks extra.

If you are not off-roading is there that much of a risk of hitting something with a stock pan? I am thinking the upgraded, 2009 and newer, OEM pan with the corresponding dip stick, dick stick tube, baffle and pickup can be had for under $200.00

I have heard of owners backing into a parking spot and punching a hole into the oil pan on a parking block. Think

Wonder what the depth dimension of their pan is?

Description says its 60mm reduction in height from stock pan.

Seem to be similar to the outfront motorsport pan (cut and welded) with fins for heat dissipation. Capacity is only 3.75L. Would not be my first choice.
