| Hi guys, I'm installing some sound deadening in my 85 Vanagon and I just realized there's an air vent on the door however there doesn't seem to be any port coming from the front dashboard to feed air into the door? Is that sliding vent useless? There seems to be a hole in the door that's supposed to pass the air into the bulkhead behind the cabinetry but again where does that airflow come from? Is this an unknown secret? (cue the spooky music) |

Nope; not a secret. It's your van's flow-through ventilation:

The secret is that you can stow a full size umbrella in the door in that duct. Stash it in the passenger door so it can be accessed safely while on the side of the road. _________________ - Jim

Guilty as charged.
Current: 1990 Westy Camper - Bostig RG4, 2wd, manual trans w/Peloquin, NAHT high-top, 280 ah LFP battery, 160 watts solar, Flash Silver, seam rust, bondo, etc., etc.
Past: 1985 Westy Camper - 1.9 wbx, 2wd, manual trans, Merian Brown, (sold after 17 years to Northwesty who converted it to a Syncro). |

The sliding vent indeed works, a dusty drive on a dirt road will prove it.
The front of the door has an oval opening sealed with a rubber perimeter to keep dust out, and it’s mated to the painted framework forward of it.
The rear of the door has another oval opening that mates to the chassis just aft of the door, where it’s surrounded by a “brush” trim on the chassis to keep dust out.
From there, the air feeding all this goes straight up the pillar forward of the sliding door, and continues to the upper vents above the slider.
On Westys anyway, I think the airflow stops at the pillar on the driver’s side… I can’t speak to non-Westys, but imagine they have upper wall vents like the passenger side of Westys have. _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

Careful on that tho, a big bump can jog that umbrella back into the B pillar and you can't open the door...

This seems obvious to the point of absurdity, but you asked. I can't say I've ever 'needed' an umbrella, but I prefer having one when walking in the rain simply because I prefer to be less wet especially if it is cold out. It is just a matter of my own personal comfort. Remarkably similar are the reason I wear clothes, have a house, have a car, etc... The umbrella I usually carry in inclement weather also has a nice wooden knob for a handle and could serve double duty as a nice bludgeon if necessary.
I'm curious, what was the motivation for your post? _________________ I am a high-functioning autistic into VW diesels and Vanagons along with other things that are unrelated to this site.

OR,, the umbrella slides forward into the 'A' pillar, especially if the umbrella has a long(ish) point.

on mine, there is a plate that covers the A pillar. the speaker wires go through the plate.
the B pillar I have made a plate to cover it to avoid the umbrella sliding back.
.. I wonder what good storage could be in the B pillar through that hole! _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

That is a GREAT idea on the blades!!!! Being from rarely-rainy NM my needs are similar to yours. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

Ok, that's the answer I was hoping for. I knew about the passthru on the passenger side but I didn't know about the low pressure zones in the door jams and this drivers vent allows internal air out of the van. Good to know. Thanks! |
