Any one know if buses were fitted with screw plates to add these assist grab handles?
I want to add some to my double cab. Thanks in advance,
Martin

Here is a good one. Just went out to move our 76 bus out of the way of one of our other cars. I released the emergency brake and tried to reverse out. Wouldn’t budge. Driver’s side rear wheel was locked up. Tried to force it to unlock by revving it up and trying reverse, then trying to move forward. No luck. Jacked up rear wheel, it would move about 3 or 4 inches, maybe less back and forth, but not anymore. Tried pumping brakes. Even removed cotter pin and tried moving wheel with axle nut. I don’t want to break anything by really forcing it. Any ideas? We just need to move it so that we can pull another car out. Drove it last week and it ran fine. |

Has it been really wet lately?
Either the cable has siezed in it's sleeve, or the shoes have stuck to the drum.
The cable can often be cured by pushing sideways on it with your foot hard so it stretches the outer sheath, but plan on installing a new one soon.
Stuck shoes can be broken free by whacking the backing plate with a rubber or dead blow hammer, hit it towards the drum. Severe cases may require poking at the shoes with a flat nosed punch and a hammer through the shoe inspection holes.
Last option is to de-adjust the shoes, if that works don't use the parking brake again because you'll be out of hail Mary's the next time. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thank you! The whacking worked using a rubber mallet after removing the wheel. I did hear and feel a nice sharp “cracking” noise almost every revolution of the wheel after it broke loose. I don’t know if it was there before or not. . It is not going to be driven until inspected further. I also noticed some uneven wear on the inside of the tire tread. Never a dull moment with these beloved buses. Thanks for making it moveable. |

Another dumb question. I’ve installed many radios on vw’s with generators. On my double cab, I am using an alternator. After about 5 minutes of driving, the music starts buzzing. When I turn off the car, the power drops. Using a 100 watt am , powered directly from the battery, fused of course. Any suggestions? Or advise? _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

I'd start with putting a voltmeter on the electrical system somewhere temporarily, what's the voltage parked?, when started?, when driving, when the buzzing starts?, etc... _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Parked 12.4v
Driving 13.8-14.2v buzzing starts about 5 min at 13.8v
Ignition off 12.4v _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Does it stop if you add a big load like the headlights? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Nothing changes with lights on, blinkers or foglights. It just buzzes louder. The amp does not dim the lights, nor do the lights lower the volume. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Maybe add a capacitor, like one used with a points style ignition to the power supply for the stereo. |

I'm going to shortly be having to get the valves out of my heads before sending them off for a bit of love.
What kind of valve spring compressor should I be looking at? On our local equivalent to ebay I can see a couple of types that look (from a distance...) like they might be options. Obviously for these prices I'm not expecting the last word in quality but I'm hoping only to have to use it the once...
This one (big C type)

Or this one?

Or should I be looking for something else? Thanks! _________________ '73 westy, 1700 type 4 with 34icts |

The big C has always worked for me, the second coil grip version doesn't always fit down beside the spring or can't get a big enough bite of spring to compress it. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Why not send the assembled head to the shop? They can inspect for cracks, replace worn guides, and recut the seats if needed. |

The plan for the rebuild includes a different cam ( a camper special) which will need HD springs, so the OG's will have to come out anyway (and I'll have to put the uprated springs in, as I haven't got them yet...)
But yes, the rest of that is the plan...plus finding me a couple or three extra cc volume...
(In the meantime, I'm getting on with what feels like a life sentence of cleaning...I think I'm on round six or seven with the case...) _________________ '73 westy, 1700 type 4 with 34icts |

There is an unusual squealing noise that my engine is now making:
https://youtu.be/_48JeCY31yQ?si=4zkvBohIgrM8iNIo
The drivers side head was recently rebuilt.
But after everything is back together, this noise is happening
which is driving me crazy trying to figure out the cause.
Does anyone have an idea what may be causing it? Thanks guys.
(Yes, the engine is idling high due to what I assume is a vacuum
leak that I haven’t been able to find yet. But am still working on it!) _________________ -Kent-

Did you put in the spacer/shim that goes between the fan and the fan hub? with no spacer the fan may wear against the fan housing. |
