Project cars might not be safe either. A friend of mine who is a cop told me that he has investigated about 3 calls in the last 3 months or so where cars (big cars like 70's pontiacs and caddys) were jacked right from peoples back yards. The people that own these cars are scratching their heads like "Who the hell is going to steal a car that hasn't run in 15 years and has been sitting in that same spot longer than that?"
I know of a local garage where the guy restores mid 60's ford "twin I beam" trucks. He had a parts truck stolen, he checked litterally 2 blocks down the road at the local Pull-a-part. Thats were the truck was. They gave it back and told him they would give him the parts that were already taken off the truck when they came in on other fords. I think I've heard that 1994 is the year where you have to have a title with the vehicle when it goes to the scrap yard (at least in North Carolina). Everything earlier is fair game I guess. |

We have a customer with a Toyota 4 Runner. Her cat was stolen out front of the High School. We replaced it, within 2 weeks it was stolen again! They were pissed! We just put a straight pipe in for now since it just passed emissions.
The junkyards in the area have been hit a few times as well as some other repair shops. |

I personally haven't seen it here...YET. But with the meth problem up here, it's just a matter of time. They've gone after metals hard already (wiring, pipes etc) so this is just another easy way to get $$ for drugs. IMO if we chopped a hand off each time they were caught, it'd make it hard to hold tools. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

Fortunately the bolts holding on my cat have become part of the cat due to rust
And how can these guys get one off in 2 minutes in a parking lot but it takes me 4 hours with a torch and liquid wrench? _________________ -Elliot

I work part time as an emissions inspector and see poor bastards come in with no converters that were ripped off and they never realized it. That sucks. I am also a Junk Picker and dont know of any reputable recycling places around here that would give you money for a Sawzalled-off converter, for legal reasons. It DOES happen, and when I find a scrap place around here that will take them, I'll buy one of those cheapie imported battery sawzalls and have a go at it!
And dont YELL at me!... I'll only steal from the RICH... not Regular Dudes like us here. Going rates for a stolen Converter around here is only about $70 and not worth getting shot at, or dogs sic-ed on ya.
While I'm at it, if there are any other "Scrappers" on here, those gas grill shells that rich folks throw away are made of aluminum and fetch about $20 at the recycling places. Anyone know of any other good curbside pickup stuff worth money besides old beer cans and lawn chairs, and copper?
This might call for a whole new Post Topic maybe? |

Not to get off track either but at work we had this giant spun aluminum flag pole and that shit blew over during a storm 2 years ago. It just laid in the grass for 2 days and I wanted to ask if I could dispose of it if they didnt know what to do with it. Well, I fucked up and waited a day too late because when I pulled up to work, there was a brand new flag pole. I asked our company pres where the old pole went and he said he had the flag pole peolpe "just haul it off" _________________ GFK

Had a local business owner here in town tell me that on one of his empty buildings, somebody got on the roof and stole 3 A/C units!
Those things ain't cheap.
Lots of junkyards around here are crushing cars like crazy. I wonder when the market will get flooded and the scrap prices will go back down? _________________ © CJ Industries, Inc.

Around here the price for scrap is stable and looks to be going up. It aint going down as far as I have seen or read. Air conditioners on roofs ya say? I just happen to have a tall ladder here! Thanks for the clue, Bro! |

| China buys all the clothes and stuff ya put into the "Goodwill" and other clothes dumpsters and turns them into rags, and gold for themselves. I wish I knew how they did that, to do it for myself here and make a few bucks. Right now I am Dumpster Diving and came up with a few nice shirts and a warm pair of coveralls for work. Sweet! Next weekend I am gonna check out some restaurant dumpsters. |

Anybody else surprised that a meth-head is able to keep himself from pawning a cordless sawzall?
I've been looking for one for a while at the pawnshops, guess I know why I can't find one now...
Seriously, though, I'm already thinking about all the stuff in the barn that's headed to the scrapper tomorrow! _________________ Wanted - Dormobile Roof Parts! |

A lot of time they simply barter the stolen merchandise for drugs instead of pawning it. I can tell you that I've seen an amazing array of stolen property at search warrants we've served. Tools, jewelry, weapons, home/car audio/TVs/electronics etc. I hate thieves. And all dopers ARE thieves _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

I'm amazed at what people bring in to the scrap yards, like bits and pieces of lamp cords and outlets etc. I go there because my wife gets wire from the trash at work.
Copper around here is going for over $2.50 a pound but on the other side I need to buy 100ft of wire for my outbuilding and is $3 a foot.
It sucks because I just threw out 3 old cats never thinking they were worth anything. |
